flydubai Upgrades 21 Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft with Lie-Flat New Business Class Seats

The airline will offer more lie-flat seating in Business Class by introducing its new cabin retrofit programme to install the seats in its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The airline made the announcement on 15 September 2026, announcing the installation of lie-flat seats in 21 aircraft fitted with reclining seats in the next 12 months. The project is part of the airline’s investments in its fleet in the wake of increased demand for premium services on its international routes. In addition to the seats, the aircraft will have expanded overhead bins to increase storage space in the cabin. This is an important move for businessmen travelling from Dubai to business centres across the Middle East, South Asia, Europe and other international destinations. However, the upgrade will not be limited to its corporate routes in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries only. The aircraft will cater to the airline’s entire network based on operational requirements and customer demand.
21 Aircraft to Receive Lie-Flat Seats
The retrofit programme will focus on 21 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft that currently feature reclining Business Class seats. These will be replaced with flydubai’s signature lie-flat seating configuration, allowing passengers to convert their seats into fully flat beds.

The distinction is particularly relevant on longer journeys, where the ability to rest horizontally can improve passenger comfort. Business travellers taking overnight or extended regional flights can benefit from additional opportunities to sleep before arriving at their destinations.
flydubai already offers lie-flat Business Class seats on parts of its fleet. The latest programme extends their availability to more aircraft rather than introducing the product.

The airline’s existing Business Class offering also includes dedicated cabin service, priority airport procedures, dining and inflight entertainment. The lie-flat configuration is therefore one part of a wider premium product that begins before boarding and continues throughout the flight.
The retrofit is expected to be completed over 12 months, making it a phased fleet improvement rather than an immediate network-wide change. Passengers should therefore check the aircraft assigned to their flight when selecting Business Class, as cabin configurations may vary during the rollout.

Larger Overhead Bins to Improve Boarding
The cabin refresh also includes the installation of Boeing’s larger Space Bins, replacing the existing overhead storage compartments on the aircraft included in the programme.
The upgraded bins can accommodate up to six standard-sized cabin bags, compared with approximately four in conventional overhead bins. This increase is intended to provide more storage capacity and reduce pressure on overhead compartments during boarding.
Cabin baggage availability is an important consideration for business passengers, many of whom travel with laptops, work equipment and essential personal belongings. Additional overhead space can make it easier for passengers to store their bags close to their seats.
The upgrade may also support a smoother boarding process by reducing the need to relocate cabin baggage when storage space runs short. For an airline operating a large network of short- and medium-haul services, improvements to boarding efficiency can contribute to the overall passenger experience.
The larger bins form part of the same retrofit programme as the Business Class seat replacement, giving the aircraft both a premium-cabin improvement and a practical storage upgrade.
Fleet Expansion Adds More Premium Capacity
The cabin programme coincides with flydubai’s plan to expand its fleet beyond 100 aircraft during 2026.

The airline announced that it would take delivery of 11 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft during the year, comprising seven Boeing 737-9 MAX and four Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. These deliveries form part of its longer-term fleet modernisation strategy, providing additional capacity while supporting network expansion.
The new Boeing 737-9 MAX aircraft feature 16 Business Class seats and 156 Economy Class seats. By comparison, some Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft in the existing fleet have 10 Business Class seats.
The additional premium seating capacity is intended to help flydubai respond to demand on important international routes and increase the availability of higher-yield travel options.
Chief Executive Officer Ghaith Al Ghaith said the fleet expansion and cabin investment reflect the airline’s focus on improving its onboard product while supporting future growth.
The Business Suite Adds Another Premium Option
The latest retrofit should also be viewed alongside flydubai’s existing premium cabin developments.
In 2023, the airline introduced its Business Suite, a more private seating concept developed for selected Boeing 737 aircraft. The product features direct aisle access, a sliding privacy door, personal storage and an integrated entertainment screen.

The Business Suite is distinct from the lie-flat seat configuration included in the latest retrofit announcement. Both products form part of flydubai’s broader Business Class offering, with availability dependent on the aircraft assigned to individual services.
The airline also provides dedicated Business Class check-in facilities at Dubai International Airport Terminal 2, access to its Business Class Lounge and priority services at selected airports. These facilities give passengers additional support before departure and during airport transfers.
Corporate Travel Remains an Important Market
These investments made by flydubai come in the wake of Dubai’s attempts to strengthen its position as one of the main hubs for international business and aviation. The airline serves more than 125 destinations in 56 countries across the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Europe and South Asia. The corporate program of the airline provides account management, flexible booking and good prices for group bookings for 10 or more passengers in one booking. In view of these services of the airline, its increased international connectivity and improved Business Class seats, it becomes possible for the company to provide more ways to serve businessmen through the company’s flights. In cases when it comes to moving the company’s employees from one regional commercial center to another, the quality of airport services may influence the choice of carriers, particularly during long flights. After that, the airline will finish the refurbishment of 21 aircraft and include other aircraft in the fleet.
