Xiangtan, China: Where Revolutionary History Meets Modern Tourism Innovation

The 6th Hunan Tourism Development Conference was recently held in the historic city of Xiangtan in central China’s Hunan Province. The occasion provided an elegant setting on which the city was presented as a place where a rich revolutionary heritage and a vibrant modern atmosphere are seamlessly blended. The city is the birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong and is famous for its abundant historical resources, with more than 300 revolutionary relics and over 90 historical sites. These landmarks are considered integral to the regional “red tourism” circuit, and through targeted development, the city has been transformed into an immersive, open-air storehouse of national history.
The Evolution of Red Tourism in Shaoshan
A significant shift in the local tourism landscape has been observed through the implementation of the “My Shaoshan Tour” programme. Launched in 2023, this study-tour initiative was designed to facilitate onsite ideological and political education for students. Through the provision of government-funded study tours, approximately 1.25 million students and teachers have been hosted. Furthermore, an additional 2.94 million visits have been recorded through various other touring programmes. The educational value of these trips is emphasized, as the history of the nation is brought to life through direct engagement with the sites where pivotal events occurred. By prioritizing these experiences, a bridge is built between the past and the present, ensuring that historical narratives are preserved for future generations.

Diversification Through Industrial and Modern Attractions
Beyond its deep-rooted historical significance, Xiangtan has been undergoing a transformation to appeal to a broader spectrum of travelers. Efforts have been made to integrate the region’s industrial heritage into the tourism portfolio. For instance, the Xianggang Cultural Park and various active production facilities, such as those operated by Geely, have been converted into attractions. Through these sites, visitors are granted rare access to view intricate industrial processes, such as steel production, which are presented in a trendy and educational context. This “hardcore” industrial tourism is recognized as a modern, unique draw that distinguishes the city from conventional historical destinations.
Furthermore, the “night economy” has been heavily promoted to enhance the overall visitor experience. A range of entertainment venues and late-night dining options has been curated and promoted through recent seasonal consumption campaigns. Initiatives such as the “Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Cultural Tourism Shopping Consumption Season” have been utilized to stimulate local spending. The issuance of cultural and tourism “consumption cards” has also been implemented to incentivize guests to extend their stays and engage more deeply with the local culture. By providing a mix of historical education and modern leisure activities, the city’s appeal is widened significantly.

Leisure and Entertainment Facilities
The tourism landscape is further enriched by leisure-focused attractions that cater to families and recreational seekers. Tropical-themed facilities, such as the Zhaoshan City Seaview Water Park, provide a contrast to the sombre dignity of the historical sites. Seasonal immersive shows and expansive floral displays, often hosted at the Panlong Grand View Garden, are frequently utilized to draw large crowds. These venues are essential to the city’s strategy of ensuring that visitors of all interests find meaningful ways to spend their time. The combination of high-energy water attractions and curated natural environments ensures that a balanced itinerary is maintained for all types of travelers.
Regional Integration and Connectivity
The future of tourism in Xiangtan is deeply intertwined with the broader Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan (CZT) city cluster integration. Connectivity has been identified as a priority, with the recent launch of a dedicated “tourist express” service that links these three major urban centres. This regional collaboration is aimed at packaging the area as a unified circuit. By making it easier for visitors to transition between the historical sites of Xiangtan, the amusement offerings in Zhuzhou, and the cultural depth of Changsha, a more cohesive travel experience is provided. This integration is expected to yield higher visitor numbers, as the accessibility of the region is improved through enhanced transport infrastructure.
Strategic Infrastructure and Future Outlook
Future plans for development are based on sustainability and preservation of heritage. Efforts are being made to improve infrastructure, such as extending high-speed rail connections (e.g., the Shaoshan–Yan’an line), to make travel easier. As these networks of transport develop, there is likely to be an increased flow of domestic and international tourists. The government’s priority is to maintain the integrity of the heritage sites while also investing in the digital and physical infrastructure required to support a modern travel destination. Through these efforts, reputation is being built for Xiangtan as a place where the weight of the past is acknowledged and the potential of the future is actively pursued.
