The new twice-weekly year-round service from Johannesburg to Zanzibar has been officially launched, with the inaugural flight scheduled to land this week. In response to increasing demand, Airlink will operate three return flights per week from 15 December 2026 to 13 January 2027. This move will see the airline add additional flights over the holiday period when demand peaks.

Furthermore, Airlink is introducing a brand-new direct flight connection from Cape Town to Zanzibar beginning on 3 October 2026. Both of these new connections are made possible by Airlink’s introduction of its new flagship planes, the Embraer E195-E2 jets. Zanzibar will become the first international destination to benefit from these new aircraft, which feature seats without a middle seat, a spacious configuration that fits 136 passengers comfortably, free food, a 20kg baggage allowance, and a 15kg sporting equipment baggage allowance.

Zanzibar: Tourism, Trade, and Economic Potential

According to Airlink CEO de Villiers Engelbrecht, Zanzibar represents more than a traditional tourist destination. The island boasts a diverse and expanding economy, including the spice trade, manufacturing, fishing, marine tourism, and offshore oil and gas exploration. These industries contribute to growing investment and trade flows, establishing Zanzibar as a key economic partner in East Africa.

With Johannesburg and Cape Town as strategic hubs, Airlink’s services position Zanzibar within reach of a network spanning 48 destinations in 15 countries across southern Africa and the SADC region. The airline also provides onward connections through its intercontinental partner network, linking Zanzibar to global markets and facilitating the flow of tourists, business travelers, and trade activities.

Enhancing Passenger Experience with Modern Fleet

The deployment of the Embraer E195-E2 jets ensures a modern, efficient, and comfortable travel experience for passengers on both routes. Features such as no middle seats, enhanced legroom, complimentary meals, and generous baggage allowances position Airlink as a premium choice for regional travel, supporting the airline’s strategy to capture high-yield passengers and attract travelers who prioritize comfort, reliability, and convenience.

These services also lay the groundwork for future fleet expansions and additional international routes, reflecting Airlink’s long-term commitment to connecting southern Africa with high-demand destinations like Zanzibar.

Boosting Travel and Tourism Between Southern Africa and Zanzibar

The new Johannesburg-Zanzibar and Cape Town-Zanzibar services are expected to stimulate tourism flows, particularly from South Africa and neighboring SADC countries. By providing frequent, non-stop flights, Airlink facilitates easier access for leisure tourists, boosting visitor numbers to Zanzibar’s beaches, marine attractions, and cultural sites.

The airline’s enhanced connectivity also opens opportunities for specialized tourism segments, including marine adventure tourism, eco-tourism, and cultural experiences, which are likely to attract higher-spending international visitors. This contributes to Zanzibar’s tourism diversification and sustainability, while generating direct and indirect economic benefits across the hospitality and service sectors.

Supporting Regional Trade and Investment Flows

Beyond tourism, Airlink’s expanded routes are expected to have a significant impact on trade and investment. By connecting major South African economic hubs with Zanzibar, the airline facilitates business travel, allowing entrepreneurs, investors, and professionals easier access to emerging markets in East Africa.

The enhanced connectivity is particularly important for sectors such as spice production, seafood exports, and offshore energy exploration, where efficient transportation of personnel and cargo can drive regional economic growth. These flights also support air freight solutions, helping local producers expand their reach within southern Africa and beyond.

Future Travel and Tourism Growth Implications

The launch of these services signals long-term growth potential for southern African travel markets. Airlink’s strategic focus on connecting South Africa to key East African destinations is expected to increase visitor volumes, encourage repeat tourism, and strengthen cross-border tourism partnerships.

Over time, frequent, reliable air services will stimulate development in Zanzibar’s hospitality sector, encouraging investment in hotels, resorts, marine tourism operators, and ancillary services. This positions Zanzibar as a regional tourism hub, capable of accommodating growing international and domestic traveler demand while fostering job creation and skills development in tourism and hospitality.

Airlink’s Strategic Role in Regional Connectivity

Airlink’s expansion into Zanzibar reflects a broader strategy to enhance regional aviation networks across southern Africa and the SADC region. By providing modern aircraft, increased frequencies, and high-quality onboard services, the airline strengthens regional mobility, supports economic integration, and facilitates tourism and business growth.

The airline’s growing network of international destinations demonstrates how regional carriers can play a pivotal role in connecting emerging tourism markets, promoting trade, leisure, and investment flows, and shaping the future of southern African aviation.

Driving Tourism, Trade and Economic Growth

New flights operated by Airlink between Johannesburg and Zanzibar and Cape Town and Zanzibar will not only serve as mere flight links but will also facilitate tourism growth, enhance trade, and help make long-term investments for South Africa and Zanzibar. Use of modern aircrafts made by the Embraer company together with a high level of service offered to passengers allows Airlink to establish itself as an industry leader operating in southern Africa.

Over the next years, flights will contribute to increasing the number of leisure travelers and businessmen as well as enhancing cooperation, thereby making Zanzibar one of the most important destinations internationally and promoting sustainable development of southern Africa’s tourism and travel industries. By linking major airports of South Africa and Zanzibar, Airlink helps develop tourism and travel in southern and East Africa.
