Edinburgh Airport has announced its largest expansion in its 75 year history with a £500 million ($654.66 million) plan to improve airport facilities. The plan will create a larger terminal with more amenities and an infrastructure to support more international flights. The first phase of development was highlighted during a visit to the South East Pier expansion site, where the project was reviewed as part of the wider £500 million investment programme. The new expansion is scheduled to become fully operational in summer 2027.

The landmark project reflects the continued commitment of airport shareholders VINCI Airports and GIP to Edinburgh Airport’s future development and supports the airport’s ambition to expand global connections from Scotland.

The five-year investment programme represents the first phase of a broader long-term vision for Edinburgh Airport and its surrounding campus. The planned improvements include the construction of new gates to support future route expansion, additional aircraft stands to increase operational capacity, and upgraded passenger facilities throughout the terminal.

Key developments will include an expanded check-in area, a larger departure lounge, improved retail and dining spaces, upgraded international arrival facilities, and enhanced baggage handling areas. The programme will increase the terminal footprint by 60%, creating more space and improving passenger movement across the airport.

Terminal transformation remains at the centre of the investment strategy, ensuring Edinburgh Airport can meet rising demand in a more efficient and sustainable way while delivering a smoother travel experience for passengers.

The expanded facilities will support the introduction of new short-haul and long-haul routes, improving Scotland’s connections with major markets across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and other global destinations.

The investment programme also supports Edinburgh Airport’s Greater Good sustainability strategy by creating opportunities for modern, low-carbon infrastructure improvements. Future upgrades will focus on improving operational efficiency while supporting the airport’s wider environmental goals.

Beyond the terminal expansion, the first phase will include improvements across the wider airport campus. These projects will feature additional electric vehicle charging infrastructure, a new access road and other developments designed to enhance airport operations and improve connectivity.
