Thailand continues its transition to being a wellness tourism destination by featuring Phuket and Phang-nga Province in Thailand’s southern region by sponsoring trips focusing on coastal landscapes, surf culture, and experiencing the nature-based activities of the region for media and content creators.

Organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the initiatives introduced global storytellers to Thailand’s emerging surf wellness experiences while promoting the country’s evolving tourism direction, “Healing Is the New Luxury”. The campaign highlights a growing global demand for meaningful travel experiences focused on physical wellbeing, emotional balance, mental relaxation and deeper connections with nature.

The programmes brought together international media professionals, digital creators and tourism partners to explore how surfing, mindfulness, outdoor activities and local culture can combine to create new wellness-focused travel experiences.

Thailand Develops Surf Therapy as a New Wellness Tourism Experience

The international journeys support Thailand’s wider development of Surf Therapy under the Thailand Health Excellence 2026 initiative. The project focuses on adapting global surf therapy knowledge and science-based wellness methods into Thailand’s tourism landscape.

Rather than positioning surfing as a medical treatment, the concept is designed as a structured wellness activity that combines ocean experiences, physical movement, breathing techniques, mindfulness practices and social interaction.

The approach reflects the changing expectations of modern travellers, who are increasingly seeking holidays that offer relaxation, personal growth and positive lifestyle benefits.

Thailand has incorporated international surf therapy principles into its own coastal tourism model by combining the country’s natural resources, hospitality expertise and wellness capabilities.

The initiative draws inspiration from international research and knowledge-sharing programmes, including expertise from global surf therapy organisations, while adapting the experience to Thailand’s beaches, communities and tourism infrastructure.

International Media Experience Thailand’s Surf and Wellness Offerings

The Amazing Thailand Surf & Wellness Journey took place from 8 to 13 August, welcoming international media representatives and content creators from major travel markets including the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan.

The participants travelled through Phuket and Phang-nga to experience Thailand’s coastal attractions, wellness facilities, cultural heritage and community-based tourism activities.

Khao Lak in Phang-nga served as a major destination during the programme. Known as one of Thailand’s established surfing locations, the area provided the setting for guided surf therapy activities combining ocean safety, physical movement and progressive surfing techniques.

The journey connected surfing with a wider wellness experience through visits to wellness resorts, nature destinations and cultural attractions.

Participants explored forest bathing experiences at Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park, travelled through the waterways of Takua Pa’s Little Amazon, discovered the historic atmosphere of Takua Pa Old Town and Phuket Old Town, and experienced local food traditions through farm-to-table activities and recognised dining venues.

The itinerary demonstrated how Thailand can combine adventure, relaxation and cultural discovery within a single tourism experience.

Phuket and Phang-nga Showcase Nature, Culture and Wellness Together

The creator journeys highlighted the diversity of southern Thailand’s tourism offering by connecting ocean activities with environmental experiences and community engagement.

Phuket provided an important gateway for international visitors, combining modern tourism infrastructure with cultural attractions and coastal lifestyles.

Phang-nga offered a contrasting experience through quieter beaches, natural landscapes and wellness-focused activities. The region’s combination of forests, islands, traditional communities and surf-friendly coastline has positioned it as an attractive destination for travellers seeking slower and more meaningful experiences.

Through the programmes, international creators captured Thailand’s wellness tourism potential through short videos, social media stories, photographs and digital content designed to reach audiences worldwide.

The content will support Thailand’s global tourism communication strategy by increasing awareness of surf wellness experiences and encouraging travellers to explore destinations beyond traditional sightseeing.

Insta360 Creator Collaboration Expands Thailand’s Global Reach

Alongside the Surf & Wellness Journey, TAT also conducted the Amazing Thailand x Insta360 creator itinerary from 8 to 12 August.

The programme welcomed 18 creators from markets across Asia, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand.

The creators followed an itinerary across Phuket and Phang-nga designed around the same “Healing Is the New Luxury” concept.

Their experiences included surf therapy sessions, nature-based activities, community interactions and cultural exploration.

Through immersive digital storytelling, the creators showcased Thailand’s coastal destinations to international audiences, highlighting the country’s ability to deliver wellness experiences that combine adventure, culture and relaxation.

The collaboration reflects the growing influence of digital creators in shaping travel decisions, particularly among younger travellers who increasingly rely on authentic online experiences when selecting destinations.

Industry Networking Supports Future Wellness Tourism Development

The two international groups came together during “The Wave of Healing” networking event held in Khao Lak.

The gathering connected international creators with tourism operators, wellness businesses, community representatives and industry stakeholders to discuss future opportunities for surf therapy and wellness tourism development.

The event provided a platform for sharing ideas about how Thailand can continue developing unique tourism products that meet changing global travel expectations.

The focus was placed on creating experiences that deliver long-term value while supporting local communities and encouraging sustainable tourism growth.

Thailand’s wellness tourism strategy aims to strengthen connections between visitors, destinations and local lifestyles, creating travel experiences that extend beyond traditional holidays.

Thailand Builds Local Capacity for Surf Therapy Tourism

A key part of the Surf Therapy initiative has been developing local expertise and strengthening the skills of Thai organisations involved in wellness tourism.

Training programmes have supported facilitators from several organisations across Thailand, helping them build knowledge in surf therapy techniques, coaching methods, visitor engagement and experience development.

The initiative follows a structured five-step approach known as “Take 5”, which includes Energise, Check-in, Breathe in, Play and Check-out.

The framework combines movement, reflection, breathing exercises, recreation and social connection within a guided surfing environment.

By building local capacity, Thailand aims to create sustainable wellness tourism products that can be delivered consistently to international visitors.

The programme also supports research, learning resources, coach networks and future development opportunities within Thailand’s growing wellness tourism sector.

Surf Therapy Programme Moves Towards International Market Launch

Thailand’s surf wellness concept is now progressing from training and development into practical tourism products.

In Khao Lak, tourism partners have created a five-day, four-night Surf Therapy programme that combines structured surfing sessions with accommodation, wellness activities, meals and nature experiences.

The package represents a new stage in Thailand’s efforts to transform surf therapy into a market-ready tourism offering for international travellers.

The development reflects a broader shift in global tourism, where visitors are increasingly searching for experiences that improve wellbeing while creating meaningful memories.

With its tropical coastline, natural landscapes, wellness expertise and strong hospitality reputation, Thailand is positioning surf wellness tourism as an important part of its future travel strategy.

Through international creator partnerships and innovative wellness programmes, the country continues to strengthen its image as a destination where travellers can reconnect with themselves, nature and local communities.
