The Asia Pacific Incentives Meetings Event (AIME) 2024 highlighted the urgency of environmental sustainability in the events industry with a significant panel discussion titled “Planet: The Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge.”

Led by Kai Hattendorf, CEO of the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI), the session aimed to align the industry with the ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement, emphasizing the shift from carbon neutral policies to achieving net zero emissions. Hattendorf’s opening remarks set a determined tone for the discussion, underlining the critical need for the events sector to contribute positively to the global environmental agenda.

Bridging Strategy and Action

The panel, comprising experts like Samantha Ferrier, Virginia Loyola, Lisa Meehan, and Bernie Stephens, delved into the practicalities of operationalizing high-level climate strategies. Ferrier shared insights into the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s (MCEC) journey towards net zero, highlighting a strategic partnership with a carbon consultant to accurately measure and mitigate Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This approach underscores the importance of a science-based, target-driven roadmap to environmental stewardship.

Diverse Challenges and Solutions

Loyola and Stephens shared their experiences in tackling emissions, illustrating the varied challenges businesses face depending on their operational scope. Loyola pointed out the significant impact of business travel on their carbon footprint, while Stephens highlighted the importance of sustainable practices, such as using biodegradable materials and promoting reusable items.

Collective Action for a Greener Tomorrow

The discussion concluded with practical advice for businesses eager to commence their sustainability journey. Meehan advocated for harnessing employee passion for sustainability, suggesting that a collective effort, even in the absence of a dedicated manager, can lead to substantial environmental benefits. Stephens echoed this sentiment, recommending seeking advice from industry peers and creating a simple, actionable plan to reduce emissions.

This panel session at AIME 2024 not only reinforced the critical role of the events industry in combating climate change but also provided a blueprint for businesses to follow in their pursuit of a greener planet.
