AirAsia Malaysia (flight code AK) has resumed its international route to Palembang, Indonesia with the first flight landing at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport welcoming passengers from Kuala Lumpur, a much-anticipated leap for the airport. The reintroduction of these flights restores the status of the airport to international level while increasing the traffic between Malaysia and Palembang that subsequently stimulates the local tourism and economic development.

The reopening of international flights to Palembang is an excellent momentum for the city to restore the tourism sector. With the strong culture, historic landmarks and its attractive role as a business city, Palembang will receive a big boost of international visitor. The new direct route from Kuala Lumpur to Palembang by AirAsia will bring both more convenience to travellers and to attract more awareness towards the natural beauty, traditional culinary and local experiences.

Palembang, capital of South Sumatra, has long been an overlooked gem in Indonesia’s tourism offerings. The city itself was always a cultural draw, but secondary cities such as Palembang have long had difficulties in attracting international visitors, who have always stuck to the more established Indonesian tourist destinations, such as Jakarta, Bali and Yogyakarta. The AirAsia Pulang ke Palembang campaign is expected to shine the spotlight on what the city has to offer, and further cement its status as a key and upcoming tourism destination within Indonesia’s growing tourism sector.

For this, the government of Indonesia is aiming at foreign tourist arrival of 14.6 -16 million tourists by 2025, which will require developing tourism to key regional destinations. The addition of connectivity to and from places like Palembang with AirAsia supports this ambition and helps it to become a reality, with destinations outside of traditional tourist centres across Indonesia given the attention they deserve.

AirAsia’s Expanding Network in Indonesia

The effect of more flights to Palembang is not only about the tourists. Through increased access into the regions, AirAsia is providing the connectivity needed to contribute to local business and tourism boom in the respective regions such as transport, hospitality, F&B, and many others. Airlines are instrumental in linking local businesses to the global marketplace, providing opportunities for exports, investments and trade. Second, the return of international flights is set to drive up demand for local services, from hotels and restaurants, to tour operators and transport firms.

Local players are already looking forward to a boost in economic activities as Palembang is set to be thronged by international tourists, ranging from leisure tourist to MICE players. Hotels, restaurants, and local businesses will be best positioned to benefit from this increased traffic in the short term, with an increase in tourism activity resulting in increased spending, job growth and new opportunities for revenue growth. Return of AirAsia’s Kuala Lumpar -Palembang supply line is a win not only for tourism but for local economy too.

Stoking the Growth of AirAsia in Indonesia

AirAsia Malaysia is further expanding its Asean network with three new direct routes from Kuala Lumpur to Bintulu and Miri in Malaysia, and to Surabaya in Indonesia. Besides Palembang, the airline also flies from Kuala Lumpur to the major cities Jakarta, Bali (Denpasar), Medan, Yogyakarta, Banda Aceh, Makassar, Padang, Pekanbaru, Balikpapan, Labuan Bajo, and Lombok. The airline is also considering inaugurating a new service to Semarang from 5 September 2025. In addition to this, AirAsia is operating flights from Penang to Jakarta, as well as Medan, providing broader travel options for the region.

AirAsia’s extensive network that also serves regional travel is directly in line with its aspiration to making its services more accessible, affordable and convenient for everyone. The airline has always been a key driver in bringing all ASEAN nations together and beyond, enabling both leisure and business travel while spurring economic activities that help contribute to the progress of the region.

The return of AirAsia flights to Palembang, this time internationially, certainly was an exciting development for the city, which has become an international focal point. With increased backing of regional governments and concerned parties, this decision is anticipated to boost tourism and local economy which will in turn produce a positive flow of benefits for the businesses, citizens and the greater region. As AirAsia adds further destinations in Indonesia to its network, the carrier is not only unlocking the means for travel, but creating economies within the region as well as a greater sense of cultural exchange throughout Southeast Asia.

Palembang is only just beginning to tap the potential of becoming an international destination and AirAsia’s return to the city sets the way towards a new era where, in an ideal world, Palembang becomes a major player in the colorful tapestry of Indonesian tourism.
