In a significant milestone, the ancient city of Agra celebrated the launch of its metro service, marked by the inaugural journey of state-of-the-art trains manufactured by Alstom. These cutting-edge Movia metros come equipped with the advanced Cityflo 650 signalling solution, promising commuters safe, dependable, and eco-friendly transportation. The inaugural train was virtually flagged off by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, while the Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath, did the honors from the Taj Mahal Metro Station.

“We are thrilled to witness this moment as Agra becomes the 6th city in Uttar Pradesh with an operational metro service. We have a strong association with UPMRC and are proud to have contributed to almost all metro projects in the state.”

Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India

Alstom, a prominent figure in the realm of smart and eco-conscious mobility, has crafted these trains within its engineering hub in Hyderabad. The advanced signaling system, a product of Gurgaon and Bangkok, complements this design. Manufacturing of these trains took place at Alstom’s cutting-edge facility in Savli, Gujarat, as part of the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. Featuring contemporary energy-efficient propulsion systems and regenerative braking, these trains significantly curtail energy usage, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solution.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director – Alstom India said, “We are thrilled to witness this moment as Agra becomes the 6th city in Uttar Pradesh with an operational metro service. We have a strong association with UPMRC and are proud to have contributed to almost all metro projects in the state. The metro promises to be a game-changer for Agra as it will enhance tourism by providing a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation to visit the city’s cultural treasures, including the iconic Taj Mahal. It will also prove to be a boon for residents as it will offer improved connectivity, reduced travel time, and a modern mobility service.”

In September 2021, Alstom delivered the inaugural trainset to the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in Kanpur. The Kanpur revenue service was officially launched by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in December 2021. Presently, a total of 26 trainsets have been supplied to Agra (9) and Kanpur (17) by UMPRC. Each trainset, configured with three cars, has the capacity to accommodate approximately 960 passengers. The Agra Metro Rail Project is anticipated to directly and indirectly benefit over two million residents of the city.

Shri Sushil Kumar, MD, UPMRC, said, Uttar Pradesh Metro has the privilege of starting the Metro projects in the fastest phase, and Lucknow was started in three years’ time, while Kanpur priority section was started in two years, two months and now underground section constructed and started in less than two years’ time in Agra. One of the biggest reasons to achieve this target was the fastest commissioning of trains. As most of the prototype testing of the train was done in Kanpur as the Kanpur and Agra trains are the same, we were able to save almost one year time in commissioning of trains and interface with signalling that was huge saving, which was achieved for the first time in India. Support of Alstom team was instrumental in the entire journey”.

The metro fleet draws inspiration from Uttar Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage and pairs it with cutting-edge design, resulting in an appealing aesthetic. Crafted with stainless-steel car bodies, the air-conditioned cars boast automated sliding doors, comfortable seating and standing areas, dedicated spaces for wheelchair users, and modern passenger information systems, creating an inclusive and inviting environment. The aerodynamic modular design of the new Movia metros not only enhances safety and security but also prioritizes environmental sustainability while delivering an exceptional passenger experience.

Equipped with Flexx metro bogies and the Mitrac propulsion system, the trains maximize energy efficiency, minimize operating costs, and adhere to stringent environmental standards. The Agra Metro features Alstom’s advanced moving block CBTC solution, Cityflo 650, incorporating modern ATP systems and continuous supervision for enhanced safety and efficiency. Alstom’s advanced signalling system ensures smooth braking and acceleration, elevating passenger comfort.

Alstom’s involvement in the Agra-Kanpur metro project encompasses designing and delivering 201 metro cars (67 metro trainsets) and implementing an advanced CBTC signalling solution (Cityflo 650) across Agra’s two corridors, spanning 27 stations and 30 kilometers. The Movia metros for Agra and Kanpur form part of Alstom’s renowned Metropolis metro solutions, trusted by over 80 customers worldwide for over 60 years.

As a pioneer in CBTC technology, Alstom boasts over 30 years of expertise and has equipped more than 190 metro lines across 32 countries. Alstom’s CBTC technology addresses global mobility challenges, ensuring seamless, connected mobility for passengers amidst increasing transportation demands.
