Bengaluru’s Namma Metro announces its first fare hike since 2017, raising ticket prices by 40-45%, with the maximum fare now ₹85, sparking commuter concerns.
Bengaluru’s Namma Metro is gearing up for a significant fare hike, with ticket prices set to increase by 40-45%. This decision, approved by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), marks the first revision in fares since June 2017. The steep hike will see the maximum fare rise to ₹85, up from the current ₹60, potentially burdening daily commuters.

While reports suggest that the base fare is likely to remain unchanged, long-distance travelers will bear the brunt of this increase. The move is expected to generate substantial additional revenue for BMRCL, which currently earns ₹2 crore daily. The fare adjustment could boost daily revenue by an estimated ₹80 lakhs or more, aiding the corporation in covering operational costs and supporting future expansions.
Namma Metro, operated jointly by the Government of India and the Karnataka State Government, boasts the second-largest metro network in India, following the Delhi Metro. Its sprawling network plays a pivotal role in easing Bengaluru’s notorious traffic congestion.

Although the fare revision aims to ensure financial sustainability for the metro, it raises concerns about affordability for the city’s vast commuter base. Many travelers rely on the metro for cost-effective and efficient transportation, making this hike a topic of intense debate in Bengaluru’s urban landscape.
