Tram travellers in Birmingham are being advised to prepare for upcoming disruptions due to construction work scheduled to start on Saturday, March 23. The Midland Metro Alliance (MMA) has announced that this necessary work is aimed at connecting new tram tracks and is expected to be completed by Tuesday, April 9. As a result, tram services between the Wednesbury and Edgbaston Village stops will be temporarily suspended.

This expansion will significantly enhance connectivity, enabling trams to operate between Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and Dudley town center within the next year, according to MMA. Sophie Allison, the managing director of West Midlands Metro, expressed excitement over the development, stating that it marks progress towards extending services to Dudley town center.

Additionally, Sandwell Council will undertake the demolition and rebuilding of Dudley Street bridge, which crosses the Metro line near Dudley Street Guns Village stop. This work is scheduled for Sundays and Thursdays from April 11 to May 16, requiring a halt in tram services between Black Lake and Edgbaston Village stops after 8pm on these days. However, service changes will not affect Fridays and Saturdays.

Despite these disruptions, tram operations between Wolverhampton and Wednesbury will continue as normal. West Midlands Metro (WMM) is committed to minimizing inconvenience for commuters. Passengers who typically use the metro between Wednesbury and Birmingham can utilize their tickets and passes on selected replacement National Express bus routes during this period. These alternatives include the 47 and 79 routes between Wednesbury bus station and West Bromwich, the 74 route to Birmingham City Centre, the 101 route to Handsworth, the 80 route to Five Ways, Birmingham, and all services connecting Colmore Row and Edgbaston.

Sophie Allison acknowledged the impact of the construction on travelers and expressed gratitude for their patience during the upgrade works. This project underscores the commitment to improving public transport infrastructure in the region, aiming to connect more communities and enhance the overall travel experience.
