It has been announced by Jindo County that the 44th Jindo Mysterious Sea Road Festival is set to take place from March 11 to March 13, offering a rich three-day program themed “The Beginning of Spring, in the Mysterious Sea!” The county has initiated systematic preparations to ensure the festival’s success, which include the introduction of stay-type night programs aimed at enhancing civilian income.

A notable strategy involves bolstering the festival’s nighttime appeal with the introduction of new attractions such as a beach torchlight and multimedia laser shows, in addition to expanding on folk culture exhibitions and interactive experiences unique to the region, with the goal of establishing it as a flagship event in Korea.

The festival’s kickoff on March 11 is expected to be highlighted by a performance from Song Ga-in, a celebrated national singer hailing from Jindo, alongside a national singing contest and a recording broadcast set to take place on a special stage located within a family home that is part of the festival’s venue. This setup is designed to foster an inclusive atmosphere where both Koreans and international visitors can actively engage in the festivities.

Efforts to diversify tourist engagement at the festival include the incorporation of Korea’s renowned love tale, “Gyeonu Wa Jiknyeo” (“A Cow Boy and A Weaving Woman”), and the “Mulberry Grandma” contest. Additionally, the festival atmosphere is to be enhanced through the illumination of the beach at night and the creation of picnic zones equipped with air domes on Gyugye Beach.

A spokesperson from Jindo-gun expressed intentions to curate a more comprehensive and varied program than in previous years, with the dual aims of contributing to civilian revenue and augmenting visitor satisfaction. Emphasis is also being placed on rigorous safety management preparations to ensure that tourists can fully experience, enjoy, and extend their stay comfortably before returning home.

The globally acclaimed Magical Sea Way, a natural phenomenon that reveals a 2.8km-long pathway between Hoedong-ri, Gogun-myeon, and Modo-ri, Uisin-myeon at low tide, remains a marvel with its consistent width of approximately 40 meters underwater, despite the twice-daily tides. Despite variations in tidal speeds and wave conditions, including those brought on by typhoons, this spectacle has drawn approximately a million visitors annually, both from Korea and abroad, eager to witness the temporary revelation of the sea path, often likened to a modern ‘Moses’s Miracle.’

This phenomenon gained international fame following a visit by the French ambassador to Korea, H.E. Pierre Randi, in 1975, who documented his experiences for the French media, further cementing the Jindo Sea Road’s status as a must-visit global attraction. The festival not only promises to enrich local tourism but also to celebrate and share Korea’s unique cultural heritage with the world, thereby supporting the growth of tourism and showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
