China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted a surge in foreign travelers, emphasizing that this rise reflects the nation’s growing openness and global appeal.

Data from various online travel platforms after the Golden Week National Day holiday revealed a 60 percent year-on-year increase in travel bookings by foreign tourists to China.

Simultaneously, several Chinese cities have emerged as top tourist destinations, drawing more international attention.

Officials attribute this rise in foreign travel to newly implemented measures designed to ease travel for visitors coming to China.

The advantages of reciprocal visa exemption

During a press briefing on Tuesday, October 8th, Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted that China currently has mutual visa exemption agreements in place with 24 countries. Additionally, China has implemented visa-free entry policies for travelers from 16 countries, allowing them to visit without the need for a visa. These policies reflect China’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international ties and enhance accessibility for global travelers.

Mao Ning further emphasized that China also offers visa-free transit options to citizens from 54 countries. Depending on their destination, travelers can enjoy a 72-hour or 144-hour visa-free stay in certain Chinese cities, enabling easier short-term visits. This initiative is part of China’s broader strategy to boost tourism and business opportunities, making the country more attractive for international visitors.

Actions taken by various cities

The spokesperson announced the release of a new government-issued travel guide called Welcome to Beijing: Essential Tips for New Arrivals. This comprehensive brochure provides a detailed overview of various services and key information to help visitors navigate the city with ease.

In an effort to simplify transactions for international travelers, Shanghai has equipped its taxis and subway stations with payment devices that accept foreign bank cards. Additionally, eight other cities, including Chengdu and Xi’an, have introduced pilot programs designed to enhance payment options for foreigners visiting China.
