DidaTravel, a technology-powered global travel distribution company, has released data indicating a notable surge in Chinese outbound travel during the Chinese New Year holidays in 2024.

The Lunar New Year eight-day holiday for 2024 is set to commence on Saturday, February 10th and conclude on Saturday, February 17th.

Dida’s booking data reveals that during the Chinese New Year period, total outbound hotel reservations reached their highest point in three years, experiencing a remarkable growth of over 310% compared to 2023. Of particular note, Chinese travelers’ hotel bookings in Singapore saw an extraordinary 11-fold increase year-on-year, while bookings in Malaysia surged by a factor of 9, and Thailand witnessed an impressive rise of 243%. These remarkable figures are attributed to pent-up demand, resulting from the easing of border restrictions in mainland China and recent visa exemption announcements.

The preferred destinations for Chinese travelers during this period included Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Spain, and the USA. Furthermore, long-haul destinations in Europe, such as France, Italy, the UK, and Germany, as well as destinations in the Americas like Mexico, Brazil, and Canada, continued to be popular choices for Chinese travelers.

During this holiday period, the Average Daily Rate (ADR) for hotels globally witnessed a substantial year-on-year increase of 32%. This surge can be partly attributed to the increased demand for higher-standard accommodations. Notably, there was a decrease in bookings for one and two-star hotels, declining from 7% to 2.6%. On the other hand, bookings for three to four-star hotels slightly dipped from 69.7% to 65.2%. Conversely, there was a noticeable increase in bookings for five-star hotels, rising from 23.3% to 32.2%, aligning with the growing preference of Chinese travelers for luxury lodging.

The average length of hotel stays for Chinese travelers also saw an increase from 2.8 to 3 days. Particularly noteworthy were the increases in Malaysia, from 2 to 2.5 days, Thailand, from 2.5 to 3.1 days, Singapore, from 3 to 3.5 days, and the Philippines, which experienced the most substantial increase from 2.3 to 4.6 days.

Rikin Wu, Founder & CEO of DidaTravel, says: “We are thrilled to witness the enthusiasm of Chinese travelers to explore international destinations and new experiences, even during this traditional holiday.
