Atal Tunnel

Thousands flocked to the picturesque landscapes of Himachal Pradesh during the Christmas weekend, transforming the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang into a favored destination alongside Kullu and Lahaul & Spiti.

In a winter spectacle, Rohtang witnessed a blanket of snow, enticing tourists to embark on a journey through the 9.2-kilometer Atal Tunnel, the world’s highest single-tube tunnel above 10,000 feet. Police data reported a staggering 65,000 people in over 12,000 vehicles crossing the tunnel on Sunday, encapsulating the festive spirit.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed gratitude, stating, “We welcome the tourists who have come in such huge numbers, crossing over lakhs.” Himachal Pradesh, having weathered a natural disaster during the monsoon season, now stands resilient, embracing the influx of visitors.

Amidst the joyous atmosphere, Sukhu commended the district administration and police for efficiently managing the surge in tourists, especially in the snow-clad north and south portals of the tunnel, where temperatures plummeted to minus 12 degrees Celsius.

Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu issued an appeal to the “lakhs of tourists” in the state, urging them to prioritize safe travel practices and adhere to traffic rules during this festive season.

As Himachal Pradesh becomes a winter wonderland, the amalgamation of natural beauty and festive cheer beckons travelers to revel in the Christmas magic.
