Eurowings has announced a new direct flight path connecting Cologne Bonn Airport with Jeddah, starting from November 5. The announcement was made by the airline and the airport during the ITB Berlin Convention on Tuesday.

The airline will operate flights to the Red Sea’s port city of Jeddah three times weekly from Cologne/Bonn as part of the winter flight schedule. Flights will depart on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, with return flights to the Rhineland scheduled for the same days. An Airbus A320neo, known for its modernity and efficiency, will service the route. This marks the inaugural direct link between North Rhine-Westphalia and Saudi Arabia.

“Our new Airbus A320neo aircraft are not only the most efficient and quietest medium-haul jets in the world. They also allow us significantly longer ranges, which means we can also reach attractive destinations in the Gulf region non-stop from Germany. We are all the more pleased that we are connecting Eurowings’ home airport directly with Saudi Arabia’s most important harbour city on the Red Sea for the first time,” says Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings.

“We are extremely pleased that our important and close partner Eurowings is adding another destination to its already large portfolio in Cologne/Bonn and using a very modern aircraft,” says Thilo Schmid, Chairman of the Managing Board at Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. “For our location, the economy in the region and especially for our passengers, the new connection to Saudi Arabia represents a further development of the great diversity of our route network.”

Starting at the end of March, Eurowings will be expanding its summer flight schedule to include six new destinations, among them Santiago de Compostela, Chisinau, and Samsun. Jeddah marks the airline’s seventh new addition from Cologne/Bonn this year.

With a population of 3.7 million, Jeddah stands as a pivotal economic center in the Arab world, thanks to its port. It’s also known as the gateway to Mecca, Islam’s most sacred pilgrimage site. The city boasts remarkable attractions, including King Fahd’s Fountain, which, at over 300 metres, ranks among the world’s tallest. Additionally, Jeddah’s historic center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
