CSMIA soars in 2023, achieving a 35% rise in passengers, setting records with 51.58M travelers and leading innovations in aviation excellence.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has achieved an impressive landmark in its journey, witnessing a substantial 35% increase in passenger numbers over the previous year. In total, the airport welcomed 51.58 million travelers in CY 2023, with arrivals accounting for over 25.4 million and departures exceeding 26.1 million. The airport experienced a significant growth in Air Traffic Movements (ATMs), recording 3,34,391 ATMs, a 20% rise from the previous year’s figure of 2,77,052. This growth highlights CSMIA’s continuing dominance in the field of aviation, with a consistent increase in both domestic and international travel, reinforcing its status as a leading global aviation hub.
The year 2023 marked a prosperous period for India’s aviation sector, particularly for CSMIA. Notably, November and December were standout months, with the airport recording its highest daily passenger traffic on November 25th, as 167,132 passengers passed through its gates. This number included over 120,000 domestic and 46,000 international travelers. Additionally, November 11th, 2023, saw a record-breaking 1,032 ATMs, the highest in a single day. December brought another record, with the highest monthly traffic reaching nearly 4.89 million passengers, a 13% increase compared to December 2022.
In terms of popular destinations, Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai continued to top the domestic charts for CSMIA, while Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi were the most favored international destinations. Leading the domestic airline market were IndiGo, Vistara, and Air India, whereas internationally, IndiGo, Air India, and Emirates held the top spots.
CSMIA also expanded its international reach, adding flights to New York, Lagos, Jakarta, Entebbe, and Melbourne, along with increased frequencies to Bangkok, Frankfurt, London, Doha, Mauritius, and more. The airport also welcomed back operations from Azerbaijan Airlines and Air Canada, enhancing its global network. The Middle East led in passenger traffic with a 35% share, followed by Australasia at 23%, Europe at 19%, North America at 15%, and Africa at 8%.
