Hawaii’s OUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort Celebrates Island Heritage with New Award-Winning Design and Local Art

OUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort & Spa has been recognised with a Silver Award at the 2026 Travel Weekly Magellan Awards, following the transformation and grand reopening of its lobby. Honoured for Hospitality Elements – Upscale (Four-Star), Lobby/Common Space Design, the resort has placed Kaua‘i’s landscape and identity at the centre of the guest arrival experience.
Ocean-facing gathering areas, commissioned artworks and natural finishes have been brought together to reflect Hawaiian cultural heritage. The distinction highlights how award-winning hotel design can be shaped by a destination rather than imposed upon it, while reinforcing the importance of place within Hawaii luxury hospitality.

Ocean-Facing Lobby Transformation Brings Kaua‘i’s Natural Beauty into Hotel Design
The redesign was developed by interior design firm 11FN in partnership with OUTRIGGER’s creative team. Its direction was established around five brand pillars: a renowned beach location, a must-see beach bar, authentic live music, signature experiences and a commitment to conservation. Instead of being limited to reception, the newly redesigned lobby was shaped as a welcoming gathering space directly connected to the island.
A prominent change involved the lobby bar. Previously described as dark and inward-facing, it was opened towards the ocean, landscaped gardens and pool. This altered relationship with the outdoors was supported by natural materials and social spaces arranged to frame the setting. Local artwork was incorporated as part of the design narrative.

The resulting arrival experience has been presented as a connection to Kaua‘i from the first moments of a stay. Through this approach, award-winning hotel design has been linked to the resort’s environment and hospitality identity.
Eight Hawaiian Artists Celebrate Island Culture Through Creative Installations and Conservation
Eight Hawai‘i artists were commissioned to interpret the island’s culture and environment through works displayed across the redesigned lobby. At the Bell Desk, Passage by Dane and Sara Nishikawa was installed, while Floating Lei by Noah Harders was placed at the Front Desk. Na Moku Ho‘omau by Allegra Scribner was created from marine debris collected along Kaua‘i’s shores and shaped into a representation of the Hawaiian Islands.

The commissions were integrated into daily guest spaces. Through them, Hawaiian cultural heritage and environmental awareness were incorporated into spaces used by guests. A sense of place is conveyed through these pieces, beyond the ocean views surrounding the resort.
Participation has also been built into the conservation programme. Guests are invited to collect marine debris for recycling and take part in artist-led sessions using recovered materials. The activities connect a visible element of the redesign with practical involvement in protecting the island’s environment.
Locally Sourced Cuisine and Live Hawaiian Music Strengthen Authentic Guest Experiences
The guest experience has been designed to extend well beyond the redesigned reception area. Ocean House by Roy Yamaguchi serves as the resort’s culinary centrepiece, with ingredients sourced from local farmers, ranchers and fishermen on Kaua‘i. Through its use of local produce, an additional culinary connection to the island is established.
Live Hawaiian music is featured at the lobby bar, where the reopened setting is framed by lush gardens and views towards the ocean and pool. A welcoming shared setting for informal gatherings has been created, with music experienced alongside the newly opened views. Music, food and visual design are thereby brought into the same guest journey.
Together, the five OUTRIGGER pillars have been translated into features that can be experienced during a stay. Within Hawaii luxury hospitality, this resort’s approach is characterised by the emphasis placed on island artists, regional ingredients and cultural performance, as identified in the redesign.
Global Hotel Alliance Loyalty Benefits Complement International Hospitality Recognition
The property’s participation in OUTRIGGER DISCOVERY connects the Kaua‘i stay with a wider hotel network. The programme is offered through Global Hotel Alliance, described as the world’s largest alliance of independent hotel brands. According to the information provided by the resort, 38 million members receive recognition, rewards and exclusive experiences across 1,000 participating hotels from 60 brands in 100 countries.

Eligible stays, dining and experiences can be used to earn or redeem DISCOVERY Dollars. Each D$ is valued at one US dollar, providing members with a clear basis for redemption. These benefits are offered alongside the destination-specific experiences introduced by the renovation.
At the 2026 Travel Weekly Magellan Awards, entries were evaluated by a panel of travel professionals against an industry standard of excellence. The Silver distinction was awarded in the category covering upscale four-star lobby and common-space design, placing the resort’s arrival areas at the centre of the recognition.
A Distinctive Recognition for Kaua‘i’s Island-Inspired Hospitality
The Silver Award recognises more than a refreshed entrance at OUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort & Spa. Through its 2026 reopening, the lobby has been presented as a place where island scenery, design and local creativity meet. Ocean-facing spaces have been introduced, the work of eight Hawai‘i artists has been showcased, and conservation activities have been made available to guests.
Dining centred on Kaua‘i suppliers and authentic live Hawaiian music complete the experience. The recognition underlines the contribution that a sense of place can make to hospitality design, while keeping the resort’s connection with the island visible throughout a guest’s stay.
