Cyprus Reopens Jakarta Diplomatic Office to Promote Tourism Growth
Image generated with AiCyprus has reestablished its diplomatic presence in Jakarta after a decade-long hiatus, aiming to attract more tourists from Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines. This strategic move is expected to strengthen Cyprus’s tourism industry, a crucial pillar of its economy. In 2023, Cyprus saw 3.8 million tourist arrivals, a 20.1% increase from the previous year, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
Tourism is a significant contributor to the nation’s economy, accounting for 12.8% of Cyprus’s GDP in 2023, up from 12.2% in 2022, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Nikos Panayiotou, the Cypriot Ambassador to Indonesia and ASEAN, explained, “Tourism is essential to our economy. With a population of about one million, we welcome approximately four million tourists annually.”
The Asian market, with its growing middle class eager to explore new destinations, presents a promising opportunity for Cyprus. The country, despite its size, offers a diverse range of attractions such as sunny beaches, historic sites, and a unique blend of European and Middle Eastern culture. Panayiotou highlighted the appeal of Cypriot cuisine and wine to Southeast Asian visitors.
Travel to Cyprus from Indonesia is made accessible through connecting flights with airlines such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, offering routes from Jakarta and Bali via the Middle East to Larnaca International Airport in Cyprus.

Cyprus plans to leverage social media and collaborate with industry stakeholders to better understand and tap into the Southeast Asian tourism market. Strengthening ties with these markets is a key part of Cyprus’s strategy to grow its tourism sector.
