Thai Airways orders 45 Boeing 787 jets, eyeing up to 80, to meet rising travel demand. A major shift to GE engines marks a new era for the carrier.

Thai Airways has taken a significant step forward by placing a confirmed order for 45 Boeing 787 jets, with the possibility of expanding the order to approximately 80 airplanes. This decision comes as a reaction to the growing demand for international air travel, as reported by sources within the industry.

This transaction is expected to be officially announced later this month and has been already included in Boeing’s order backlog as a purchase for 45 aircraft from an unnamed client. Boeing has opted not to comment on this development and has directed inquiries to Thai Airways, which has yet to make a formal statement.

In a notable change from its previous practices, Thai Airways will equip these new jets with engines supplied by GE Aerospace, moving away from its traditional partnership with the UK-based Rolls-Royce. This signifies a pivotal moment for the airline, which currently uses Rolls-Royce engines in its existing fleet of 787s, showcasing a victory for GE and heralding a new era for the airline, as mentioned by the sources.
