Delhi experienced another day of intense cold and thick fog on Tuesday, impacting both air and rail travel. The fog led to significant visibility issues, causing delays and cancellations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
The chilly weather and dense fog prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for the capital on Monday, anticipating heavy fog over the area.
Visibility reductions due to the fog caused disruptions in flight operations at Delhi’s airport. Rail travel was also affected, with 28 trains bound for Delhi, including the Howrah-New Delhi and Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Expresses, facing delays due to the adverse weather conditions.
The IMD reported that Delhi’s temperature would fluctuate between a low of 7 degrees Celsius and a high of 18 degrees Celsius.
On Monday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 17.6 degrees Celsius, which was three degrees below the average for the season. The minimum temperature was noted at 6.1 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than the 4.8 degrees Celsius recorded the previous day.
The IMD predicts persistent dense fog in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh until the morning of January 26. Additionally, shallow fog in the Jammu division, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand has been affecting visibility.
As for Delhi’s air quality, it was categorized as “severe” on Tuesday. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Anand Vihar was recorded at 403 by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at 8 a.m.
Last week, visibility dropped to ‘zero’ for the first time this winter in various locations, including Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan, Patiala, Ambala, Chandigarh, Palam, Safdarjung in New Delhi, Bareilly, Lucknow, Bahraich, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Tezpur, as reported by the weather department.
