On March 14, 2024, in São José dos Campos, Brazil, Embraer announced that it has obtained extended twin-engine operations (ETOPS) approval for the E190-E2 and E195-E2 aircraft from Brazil’s Civil Aviation Authority ANAC (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil), the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), and the EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency), allowing for 120-minute ETOPS capability. This milestone enables E2 operators to undertake direct routes over water and remote regions without time or fuel constraints, enhancing operational efficiency.

The attainment of ETOPS-120 certification underscores the robust design of the aircraft and the maturity of its systems. ETOPS certification necessitates the accumulation of flying hours by the operational fleet, a benchmark delayed by the global pandemic, which curtailed aircraft operations worldwide. Consequently, the E2’s ETOPS certification arrives later than anticipated.

Arjan Meijer, President and CEO Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “ETOPS is an important additional capability for the E2, and a key enabler for more sales, especially in Asia Pacific. Airlines flying routes with up to 120 minute diversion time will be able to use straighter, quicker and more fuel efficient routes, and have access to more diversion airports. ETOPS capability is a further optimisation of the E2, already the most fuel efficient aircraft in its segment.”
