England’s Newcastle is in awe at tourist surge for pink party

In a vibrant tribute to the forthcoming performance by global pop icon Pink, the city of Newcastle, England, is embracing a vivid transformation. The anticipation for Pink’s concert, part of her Summer Carnival world tour at McDonald Jones Stadium on February 13, has spurred the city into action, creating a celebratory atmosphere that promises to captivate both residents and tourists alike.

The Newcastle Tourism Industry Group (NTIG), with financial assistance from the City of Newcastle’s City Centre and Darby Street Special Business Rate (SBR) program, has orchestrated a Pink Party Trail. This initiative has turned Wheeler Place into a festive zone, complete with a giant disco ball and a brightly colored dance floor, setting the stage for the citywide celebration.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes highlighted the extraordinary demand for live music performances in the city, as evidenced by the swift sell-out of Pink’s concert. Reflecting on the success of past performances by Elton John and Paul McCartney, Nelmes emphasized the significant economic impact expected from Pink’s show, which is projected to inject $9 million into the local economy through accommodation, retail, and dining.

This event is seen not only as a triumph for music enthusiasts but also as a catalyst for city-wide transformation, enhancing Newcastle’s appeal as a host for major events. Such events are recognized as pivotal tourism drivers, contributing to the region’s economic vitality and cultural dynamism.

The city commenced its celebrations in honor of Pink earlier this week, with notable landmarks like the City Hall clock face and McDonald Jones Stadium bathed in pink light. The Pink Party Trail, which will begin on Friday, February 9, and run for four nights leading up to the concert, features an array of pink-themed activities and offerings, including an open-air disco at Wheeler Place.

Michael Stamboulidis, Chair of NTIG, expressed the city’s readiness to welcome fans with themed dining and entertainment options, along with the chance to win VIP tickets to the concert. He noted the enthusiasm of local businesses to participate in the festivities, emphasizing the broader economic and cultural benefits of hosting such large-scale events.
