Salvador, Brazil, has launched its 2026–27 cruise season with the arrival of World Odyssey on 7 October 2026, marking the beginning of a busy period for Bahia’s coastal tourism industry. The port expects more than 50 cruise calls involving 16 ships, with projections of nearly 185,000 passengers and approximately 50,000 crew members throughout the season.

The World Odyssey, which operates Semester at Sea’s 138th World Voyage, opened the programme with a six-day visit scheduled to end on 13 October. The ship accommodates around 520 passengers and combines international travel with educational experiences.

According to Companhia Docas da Bahia (CODEBA), the port authority responsible for Salvador, the new season will support tourism businesses, transport operators, restaurants and local attractions. The schedule also brings larger cruise vessels and international visitors to one of Brazil’s most recognisable cultural destinations.

MSC Virtuosa Brings Major Cruise Capacity to Bahia

The arrival of MSC Virtuosa represents one of the biggest developments in Salvador’s cruise calendar. The ship will operate seven-night voyages from Santos, connecting passengers with Salvador, Maceió and Búzios.

MSC Virtuosa can accommodate thousands of holidaymakers, and its scheduled visits could bring more than 4,500 passengers to Salvador each week. This passenger volume creates substantial opportunities for local tourism operators, particularly businesses offering organised sightseeing, dining and cultural activities.

The vessel’s deployment also strengthens Salvador’s connection with Brazil’s domestic cruise market. Travellers departing from Santos can explore several coastal destinations during one holiday without arranging separate accommodation and transport between cities.

For Salvador, these regular calls could generate demand for guided excursions, local transport and waterfront services. However, the actual economic contribution will depend on passenger spending, shore participation and the number of completed port visits.

Official Port Forecast Highlights International Cruise Demand

CODEBA’s official announcement on 7 October provides a more precise forecast than the initial industry report. It identifies 47 scheduled calls, 16 ships from 13 cruise companies, 181,974 passengers and 54,656 crew members through 9 April 2027.

These figures represent approximately 237,000 passenger and crew movements. They also highlight Salvador’s importance within Brazil’s cruise network, although schedules and final arrival totals may change.

International Cruise Ships Expand Salvador’s Appeal

The season also includes international cruise operators, bringing visitors who want to experience Bahia’s cultural attractions.

The industry schedule identifies Celebrity Equinox, Seabourn Venture and Azamara Journey among the vessels expected to visit Salvador. It also lists Buenavista, operated by Corazul Cruceros, for visits during January and February.

These ships serve different cruise markets, including premium travel and destination-focused holidays. Their presence could help Salvador attract travellers who prioritise cultural excursions and local experiences.

Bahia Strengthens Tourist Security with Operation Navio

Bahia’s government has launched Operação Navio 2026–27 to support visitors arriving at Salvador’s cruise terminal.

The initiative involves more than 2,000 police personnel throughout the season, including officers with foreign-language skills. Civil and military police teams will focus on tourist districts, port surroundings and other important visitor locations.

The government has also strengthened passenger assistance through specialised tourism policing teams. These officers can help international travellers navigate the city and access support during their stay.

Cruise Tourism Creates Opportunities for Bahia’s Economy

This expanding cruise itinerary has the potential to bolster hospitality, retail and transportation for Salvador.

CODEBA, in the 2025-26 season the cruise activity in Brazil added to the local GDP a total of R$ 4.76 billion and generated 64,529 jobs, as a result of a study of FGV and CLIA Brasil.

The coming cruise season of 2026-27 means more opportunities for visitors to visit Salvador via coastal routes. The question for Bahia now is how to turn cruise visitors into local expenditures while protecting the safety and integrity of the experience.
