Join GSTC at ITB Berlin 2024 to explore sustainable travel transformation from March 5-7. Insights on standards and certification for a greener future.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) will make its appearance at the ITB Berlin event in 2024. Themed “Leading the Way in Transforming Travel & Tourism. Together,” this gathering will see the convergence of professionals from the sectors of industry, academia, and government to explore innovative approaches and strategies for a transforming travel sector. This event is slated to take place at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds from March 5th to March 7th, 2024.

Participating in this notable event will be Dr. Ioannis Pappas, GSTC’s Director for the Mediterranean Region and a member of the GSTC Board, along with Matthias Beyer, CEO of Mascontour and GSTC Board Member, Rika Jean-François, CSR Commissioner at ITB Berlin and GSTC Board Member, Netsai Bollmann, Programme Manager for the Kavango Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area Secretariat and GSTC Board Member, and Roi Ariel, the GSTC General Manager.

Roi Ariel, in his capacity as GSTC General Manager, is set to deliver a keynote speech at the 19th Green Business Forum for Tourism Professionals. This presentation is scheduled for March 5th, from 14:05 to 14:25, at the ITB Lighthouse Stage located in Hall 4.1b, which focuses on Adventure Travel and Responsible Tourism.

In his address, Mr. Ariel will focus on the critical topic of Sustainable Tourism Standards, emphasizing that sustainable tourism transcends being merely a notion—it’s a critical necessity. With the ongoing expansion of the travel and tourism sector, the demand for authentically sustainable practices has never been higher. The GSTC is leading this charge by managing the GSTC Criteria, which are internationally recognized standards for sustainable tourism. These standards play a crucial role in ensuring that tourism not only benefits local communities and conserves cultural heritage but also protects the environment.

He will also discuss how adventure tourism and outdoor activities depend on the sustainable management of natural environments, underpinned by the GSTC standards and the proactive efforts of involved stakeholders. The application of these standards is essential for protecting natural resources and enhancing the travel experience.

Through his talk, Ariel aims to illuminate the significance of these standards as guiding tools for destinations, businesses, and tourists, steering the tourism industry towards sustainability. By complying with these standards, destinations and businesses can showcase their dedication to responsible tourism, gaining trust from travelers and boosting their reputation.

Additionally, Ariel’s presentation will highlight how the GSTC, as a global entity, endorses sustainable tourism certification, helping attendees grasp the certification’s value in ensuring quality and sparking positive transformations across the tourism landscape.
