Hamburg Airport has achieved the milestone of becoming the inaugural German participant and the 12th member of the international “Hydrogen Hub at Airport” network. This network, comprising representatives from airports, airlines, and the energy sector across 11 countries, such as France, the USA, UK, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand, aims to facilitate the growth of hydrogen infrastructure within the aviation sector.

The international network is dedicated to researching, developing, and expanding the infrastructure required for utilizing hydrogen in aviation. Hamburg Airport’s inclusion in this network is a significant step, given its expertise in hydrogen. This move aligns with the ZEROe Ecosystem’s vision to establish a future where aviation relies on decarbonized hydrogen. The collaboration with Hamburg Airport is seen as crucial in preparing airport infrastructure to support hydrogen and low-carbon aviation, laying the groundwork for the deployment of hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2035.

Karine Guénan, Vice President of the ZEROe Hydrogen Ecosystem, emphasized the importance of airport involvement in the “Hydrogen Hub at Airport” concept, stating that it is pivotal for achieving the goal of hydrogen-powered aircraft. The use of hydrogen not only promises to significantly reduce emissions during flight but also contributes to the broader decarbonization of aviation infrastructure on the ground.

In 2020, Airbus initiated the Hydrogen Hub at Airports program to drive research into the infrastructure requirements and low-carbon operations at airports throughout the aviation value chain. Hamburg Airport’s collaboration in this initiative also involves Linde, a leading global industrial gases and engineering company.

Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport, expressed excitement about the collaboration, noting that working alongside international hubs like Paris – Charles de Gaulle and Changi Airport in Singapore signifies decisive preparations for an energy transition in air travel. He praised the pioneering efforts of the airport’s staff, emphasizing the dedication and groundwork laid over many years.

Airbus unveiled its ZEROe concept aircraft in 2020, and the corresponding technology building blocks are now being developed through a global research and technology network focused on advancing hydrogen technology for future commercial aircraft.
