Lufthansa ground crew planning for strikes on Wed, 4 a.m.-Thurs 7:10 a.m., hitting Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Dusseldorf over wages dispute.
Lufthansa’s ground crew, represented by the Verdi union, is planning to strike this coming Wednesday. This strike is expected to impact several major German airports including Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, and Dusseldorf. The action is set to start early at 4 a.m. on Wednesday and conclude at 7:10 a.m. on Thursday. This move is part of a broader wave of strikes affecting Germany’s transport sector, with workers advocating for increased wages.
The strike is occurring amid wage negotiations for ground staff at Lufthansa. The union is pushing for a substantial pay increase, requesting a 12.5% raise for 25,000 employees. Alternatively, they are seeking at least a 500 euro increase in monthly pay over a twelve-month period, coupled with a one-time payment of 3,000 euros to compensate for the rising cost of living. The union cites the higher living expenses and the additional burden of working with reduced staff as the main reasons for their demands.
This upcoming strike follows a previous walkout by Lufthansa ground staff in July 2022, which led to significant disruptions in travel. Since that time, Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has experienced numerous nationwide strikes that have affected air travel, railways, and public transport systems, highlighting the ongoing struggle for better wages among workers.
