these nasty little critters have been spotted in hotels, emergency services, and other public places. The last thing you want is a bug crawling across your Cobb Salad while you gaze at Waikiki Beach.

For instance, a Japanese couple with small babies recently vacationed in Hawaii for 30 days at an upscale Hilton hotel and battled bed bugs for 10 of those days. Despite changing rooms, their efforts were in vain.

The children endured bites, allergic reactions, and fevers. Hotel management claimed a pest control company found no bed bugs. However, a medical doctor who examined the children confirmed the bites were consistent with bed bugs.

Hawaii Bed Bug Infestation

In another example proving that bed bugs are pervasive, an emergency call center in Honolulu was temporarily shut down for fumigation. Last year, the Honolulu airport terminal had to be cleaned and fumigated by the Department of Transportation to eliminate the bugs.

The concern is that travelers unknowingly carry bed bugs on their person or in their luggage. An infestation could devastate Hawaii, which relies heavily on tourism.
