Heathrow Airport

Today, February 22nd, commemorates the 60th anniversary of The Beatles’ return from their inaugural North American tour in 1964. Upon their arrival at Heathrow (formerly known as London Airport), they were greeted by a massive crowd of more than 4,000 fans, celebrating the end of their fortnight journey through the United States.

In honor of this milestone, members of the Heathrow Terminal 5 Passenger Experience Team have recreated three iconic Beatles album covers: Abbey Road, The Red Album, and Help!, as a tribute. Additionally, Heathrow’s terminals are filled with the melodies of The Beatles today, in a nod to Paul, John, Ringo, and George’s homecoming.

The band embarked on their American adventure by boarding Pan Am flight 101 from Heathrow to New York City on February 7, 1964, propelled by the popularity of their hit single “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” This trip heralded the start of The Beatles’ ascendancy in the United States, culminating in seventeen Top 40 singles and six number one hits over the course of six months.

Throughout its 78-year history, Heathrow has been the backdrop for many significant cultural events, including Queen Elizabeth II’s first return to the UK as monarch, the England Rugby Team’s arrival after their 2003 World Cup victory, and The Beatles’ travels for their 1966 North American tour.

Heathrow’s role in iconic welcomes is also celebrated in the opening scene of “Love Actually,” showcasing the heartfelt reunions that occur daily at the UK’s premier international airport, connecting passengers from across the globe.
