Heavy traffic warning in Malaysia-Singapore checkpoints as Christmas and New Year’s holiday nears

Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has issued a warning of very heavy traffic at the Woodlands and Tuas land checkpoints during the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s Day long weekends. The surge in crossings has been attributed to increased travel and heightened security measures in response to the situation in the Middle East.

Over the weekend of Dec 15 to Dec 17, traffic at both land checkpoints exceeded pre-COVID-19 levels, with more than 1.3 million travelers passing through, averaging close to 435,000 crossings daily. This represented an increase of almost 30,000 travelers compared to the same period in 2019, equivalent to nearly 10,000 more crossings daily.

The ICA advised travelers to anticipate longer wait times for immigration clearance, particularly for those in cars, who might experience up to a three-hour wait. The authority requested travelers’ understanding, cooperation, and patience, urging them to observe traffic rules, maintain lane discipline, and cooperate with ICA officers.

To help manage the situation, the ICA recommended that motorists check the traffic conditions at the checkpoints before starting their journeys, using the Land Transport Authority’s One Motoring website. The authority emphasized the importance of avoiding queue cutting, as it can lead to severe congestion and compromise the safety of other motorists. Errant motorists caught queue cutting will be turned away and required to re-queue.

Additionally, departing travelers driving Singapore-registered cars must comply with the “three-quarter tank” rule. Failure to adhere to this rule could result in a composition sum of up to S$500 (US$375) or prosecution in court. Offenders will also be turned back at the checkpoints and not permitted to proceed with their journey into Malaysia.

As the holiday season approaches, the ICA’s advisory serves as a reminder for travelers to plan their journeys carefully, consider potential delays, and adhere to the rules and regulations to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience during the festive period.
