In a remarkable collaboration with cardiac surgeons from Honduras, the adept heart specialists at Health City Cayman Islands orchestrated a life-saving procedure for Brigadier General Roosevelt Leonel Hernández Aguilar, the former General Commander of the Honduran Army who recently ascended to the position of Joint Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Honduras.

Dr. Binoy Chattuparambil, Senior Consultant in Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery and Clinical Director at Health City, highlighted the crucial significance of close cooperation with medical facilities in the region. He emphasized that this collaboration often determines the survival of patients dealing with critical heart conditions.

Dr. Binoy clarified that Health City Cayman Islands does not seek to compete with local or regional healthcare providers. Rather, the tertiary care facility stands ready to intervene when other institutions lack the necessary resources, equipment, or expertise. “Our goal is to save lives,” he stated firmly, stressing the importance of timely referrals.

Echoing Dr. Binoy’s sentiments, Chief of Staff Hernández acknowledged Health City as the pivotal ground for his “rebirth” following a severe heart attack. He expressed immense gratitude for the exceptional medical teams and specifically praised Dr. Binoy as a dedicated doctor who, with simplicity and humility, motivated patients to persevere through unwavering optimism.

Initially admitted to a military hospital in Honduras due to acute chest pain in May, the Chief of Staff was diagnosed with a major heart attack. Swift medical action, including catheterization and the implantation of two stents, was taken to reinforce his cardiac arteries. Despite being discharged the next day, his family remained deeply concerned and sought further assistance.

Upon the recommendation of Honduran surgeons, the army official was transported to Grand Cayman via air ambulance due to his deteriorating health. Dr. Binoy noted that the initial treatment in Honduras, involving cardiologists opening blocked blood vessels with stents, was well executed. However, subsequent tests revealed clots within the implanted stents and the left ventricle, necessitating open-heart surgery.

At this critical juncture, the attending cardiologist contacted Dr. Binoy, signifying the urgency of the situation. The intricate surgery, lasting over six to seven hours, involved accessing the weakened chamber to remove the clot. Ultimately, the surgical team successfully bypassed the obstructed arteries and extracted the blood clot from the pumping chamber, resulting in a positive outcome.

After spending four to five additional days in the hospital post-surgery and another week on the island, the patient was discharged and returned to Honduras.

Dr. Binoy highlighted Health City’s innovative surgical techniques, particularly the use of arteries from both sides of the breastbone for bypass surgery. He noted that this method greatly improves long-term heart function compared to the traditional use of veins from the patient’s legs.

Roosevelt Leonel Hernandez Andino, the patient’s son, expressed profound gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Health City, acknowledging the comfort and confidence they felt despite the complexities of his father’s condition.

Ondina Suyapa Andino Avila, the Chief of Staff’s wife, echoed these sentiments, considering the entire experience nothing short of miraculous and extending heartfelt thanks to God for her husband’s recovery.

Chief of Staff Hernández also expressed deep appreciation for the nursing staff, emphasizing their care extended beyond the medical aspects, providing profound thoughts and a sense of spirituality that contributed to his healing journey.

Lastly, he conveyed immense love and admiration for the medical staff at Health City, recognizing their unwavering dedication and expertise in saving lives, an experience he carries deeply within his heart.
