The hotel and tourism industry in Dharamsala, which underwent financial stress for the past about two years due to lack of tourists, is now witnessing business getting back on track. Weekend tourism is starting to get better in the region and in the coming months, tourists from other states are also expected to visit.
AshwaniBamba, president of the Hotel and Tourism Association of Upper Dharamsala said that hotels in the region are witnessing 50 to 70 per cent occupancy during the weekends. During this long weekend of Dussehra, tourists are visiting in promising numbers. “We expect the room occupancy to cross 70 per cent,” Bamba said.
The Dharamsala tourism industry is optimistic about the return of foreign tourists too. The industry is heavily dependent on foreign tourists who visit for the teachings of the Dalai Lama and for studying in the monasteries of Tibetans in the region.
Sanjeev Gandhi, the general secretary of the Smart City Dharamsala Hotel Association, said that the Union Government has announced that it will give free visa to 5 lakh foreign tourists.
The Tibetan monasteries and museums hold great attraction in Dharamsala for Indian and foreign tourists.
