London’s iconic Tower Bridge is set to undergo essential maintenance work, leading to its closure for three days during the August Bank Holiday weekend. To facilitate the maintenance, the bridge will be raised for extended periods, impacting traffic and pedestrian access.

The scheduled work entails the replacement of damaged metal plates situated at the rear of the bascules, the operational components responsible for the bridge’s movement. These parts have suffered wear and tear over time, necessitating the repairs.

Beginning at 10 pm on Friday, August 25, the closure will last until late on Monday, August 28, unless the maintenance is completed ahead of schedule. During this period, signed diversion routes will be established via Southwark Bridge for vehicles and pedestrians.

Marine traffic will be able to pass under the bridge as per pre-agreed arrangements.

While the visitor attraction itself will remain open, visitors are advised to book tickets in advance and enter through the ticket office on the north side, closest to the Tower of London.

The maintenance project will be overseen by Bridge House Estates. Giles Shilson, the chairman of the Bridge House Estates board, emphasized the importance of the work to maintain the bridge’s functionality amidst daily wear and tear. Shilson acknowledged the inconvenience the closure may cause while reassuring the public of the project’s necessity to ensure the bridge’s longevity for years to come.

Despite the closure’s impact on vehicular and pedestrian movement, Tower Bridge’s role as a landmark and a vital transportation route remains integral to London’s infrastructure. The maintenance underscores the city’s commitment to preserving its historical and functional icons while maintaining smooth urban operations.
