The Immigration Museum has recently undergone a transformation to host the new multi-sensory and multimedia exhibition titled “Joy,” which commenced this month. This exhibition is a celebration of happiness, brought to life through dynamic designs and compelling storytelling. It showcases seven newly commissioned installations by artists based in Victoria, aiming not only to captivate the audience with their visual and interactive allure but also to significantly impact tourism by providing a unique cultural experience.

It was revealed that the exhibition has been in the works since 2022, initially intended to celebrate the use of color. As the concept evolved, the central theme shifted towards joy, aiming to delve into the emotional resonance beyond mere aesthetics, while still maintaining a strong emphasis on color in the selection of artists.

Rebecca Lal, the museum’s experience and interpretation manager, mentioned that the search was for artists who not only incorporated color into their work but also could present a distinct interpretation of joy. The Immigration Museum sought to diversify the narrative by engaging a broad spectrum of creators, including a fashion designer, illustrators, poets, and filmmakers, among others, to share their unique perspectives on joy.

The exhibition has taken over two floors of the museum, starting with vibrant, large-scale cut-out artworks by Venezuelan-born Australian artist Nadia Hernández on the ground floor. Further enriching the visitor’s journey are the Joy Pots displayed along the stairwell, featuring bright graphics contributed by the public. The main exhibition space on the second floor offers six more installations with interactive components, promising favorites like Spencer Harrison’s runway installation and Callum Preston’s nostalgic Video Land, among others.

The “Joy” exhibition at the Immigration Museum is more than just an artistic endeavor; it’s a pivotal cultural event designed to enhance tourism by offering a distinct and immersive experience that celebrates joy in various forms. Through its vibrant installations and the diverse stories they tell, the exhibition invites visitors to explore joy from different perspectives, fostering a sense of community and connection.

This emphasis on shared experiences and the celebration of individuality and collective memories not only enriches the cultural landscape but also positions the exhibition as a beacon of positivity and unity in times of conflict and division. By drawing visitors into a world where joy is palpable and omnipresent, the Immigration Museum significantly contributes to the cultural tourism sector, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking inspiration and a deeper connection with the community.
