India and Indonesia are set to witness a major boost in air connectivity as AirAsia Indonesia prepares to launch direct flights between the two countries, catering to the rising demand for seamless travel. With India emerging as one of Indonesia’s fastest-growing inbound tourism markets, destinations like Bali, Jakarta, and Yogyakarta continue to attract Indian travelers for both leisure and business. The recent bilateral air service agreement expanding flight capacity has further paved the way for enhanced connectivity, making it easier and more affordable for passengers. AirAsia Indonesia’s expansion is expected to bridge the gap in direct routes, strengthen tourism ties, and contribute to the growing aviation sector in both nations.
Indonesian low-cost airline, AirAsia Indonesia, is gearing up to enter the Indian market with direct flights to key Indian cities. The move signals a significant expansion in its international network, catering to the growing demand for affordable travel options.

With India’s booming aviation sector and increasing interest in Indonesian destinations like Bali and Jakarta, AirAsia’s expansion aligns with its strategy to strengthen its presence in key international markets.
India and Indonesia have been strengthening bilateral ties, leading to enhanced cooperation in multiple sectors, including aviation. A recently signed bilateral amendment has paved the way for improved air connectivity, significantly boosting direct flight operations.

The new agreement increases flight frequencies and expands traffic rights for airlines from both countries. Previously, air travel between Indonesia and India was limited to 28 weekly flights per country. Due to high demand and limited flights, most travelers relied on connecting routes through Singapore, Malaysia, or Thailand.
The revised agreement shifts from a flight-based cap to a seat-based capacity system, allowing airlines to operate up to 9,000 one-way seats per week. This translates to nearly 50 weekly one-way flights, significantly improving accessibility to key destinations.
Indonesia has become a major travel destination for Indian tourists, with Bali leading the way. The island is known for its beaches, vibrant culture, and affordability, making it a preferred choice for leisure and honeymoon travelers.
Tourism data from 2023 shows that over 700,000 Indian travelers visited Indonesia, making India one of Indonesia’s fastest-growing inbound markets. Other destinations like Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Lombok are also gaining popularity. Jakarta serves as a business hub, Yogyakarta is known for historical sites like Borobudur and Prambanan temples, and Lombok offers luxury resorts and pristine beaches.

One of the key reasons for Indonesia’s appeal is the visa-free entry policy for Indian nationals, allowing stays of up to 30 days without a visa. This, combined with affordability and cultural familiarity, has strengthened travel demand.
Despite this, direct flight options between the two countries remain limited. The majority of travelers are forced to transit through third countries. The growing demand and the recent air agreement provide an opportunity for airlines to establish direct routes.
Reports indicate that AirAsia Indonesia has been evaluating routes to India for some time. In April 2024, the airline considered launching flights from Jakarta to Chennai and Bali to Kolkata, although these plans did not materialize.
Now, with renewed interest, AirAsia Indonesia is expected to focus on high-demand Indian cities that fit its network and aircraft capabilities.
AirAsia Indonesia operates an all-Airbus A320-200 fleet, which has a limited range. Direct Jakarta-Delhi flights are not feasible with this aircraft. However, Jakarta-Mumbai could be possible, as seen with IndiGo’s A320neo operations.
For Bali to India routes, long-haul destinations like Mumbai would require a stopover, possibly in Kuala Lumpur. If AirAsia Indonesia follows this model, Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata could become viable options.
However, direct flights to Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad seem most likely due to their closer proximity to Indonesia and growing passenger demand.
On the Indonesian side, AirAsia Indonesia’s primary focus is expected to be on three key destinations:
Medan could be considered for future expansions, but Jakarta and Bali remain the most viable launch points.
AirAsia Indonesia is set to launch direct flights to India, enhancing air connectivity and boosting tourism between the two countries. This expansion aligns with rising travel demand and a new bilateral air service agreement.
If AirAsia Indonesia launches direct flights to India, it will be a historic milestone, as no Indonesian airline has ever operated direct services between the two countries.
This expansion could bridge the connectivity gap between India and Indonesia, driving tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges. The bilateral air agreement’s seat-based system allows for further growth, potentially opening up more direct routes and increased flight frequencies in the future.
As AirAsia Indonesia prepares for this major move, Indian travelers can soon expect greater convenience and affordability in flying directly to Indonesia.
