The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), together with strategic content partner Content With Purpose (CWP), has introduced a new digital documentary series titled Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose. The initiative explores how tourism can generate meaningful and sustainable value for destinations, businesses, communities and travellers across the Asia Pacific region.
Released during PATA’s 75th anniversary year, the series focuses on the future direction of tourism in Asia Pacific. Through documentary storytelling, expert conversations and real-life examples, it highlights how the tourism sector can adapt to major global challenges, including climate change, evolving traveller demands, technological transformation and the need for more inclusive and resilient development.
Tourism remains a key driver of economic growth, cultural identity and employment opportunities across Asia Pacific destinations. However, the long-term strength of the industry will depend on more than increasing visitor numbers. Destinations must adopt responsible approaches that protect natural and cultural resources while ensuring communities benefit from tourism growth.
Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose showcases practical examples of organisations and individuals already working towards a more responsible tourism future. The series highlights important themes such as sustainable destination management, climate resilience, community involvement, responsible technology adoption, workforce advancement and stronger regional partnerships.

Developed by CWP in collaboration with PATA, the documentary series brings together voices from tourism destinations, industry organisations, educational institutions and businesses connected to the wider visitor economy.
Featured contributors and content partners include Hainan University-Arizona State University International Tourism College, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Hong Kong Metropolitan University Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, Marianas Visitor Authority, Song Saa, The Luxury Signature and Travelife.
The series also presents insights from tourism executives, government representatives, researchers, entrepreneurs and industry specialists. Contributors include Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO of PATA; Insook Lee, Executive Director for the Americas at Korea Tourism Organization; Karen Yu, Group Editor at TTG Asia Media; Deepak Joshi, Advisor at PATA Nepal Chapter; Soon-Hwa Wong, PATA Ambassador for Greater China; and Yang Li, Head of Public Affairs, Asia Pacific at Booking.com.
The documentaries feature a wide range of stories demonstrating how tourism can create positive change. They explore community-driven solutions to overtourism challenges in Hawai‘i, conservation-focused tourism businesses in Lao PDR that support local communities, and innovative destination approaches in the Philippines and Thailand that balance visitor experiences with local prosperity.
The series also examines how students and educators are shaping the next generation of tourism professionals, how Indigenous knowledge contributes to responsible destination management in the Marianas, and how hospitality companies are transforming sustainability practices by combining luxury experiences with long-term environmental and social responsibility.
Together, these stories show that purposeful tourism can take different forms. It can help protect biodiversity, preserve cultural heritage, support local businesses, develop skills and employment opportunities, encourage responsible use of technology and strengthen destinations against future challenges.
The launch of Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose reinforces PATA’s ongoing commitment to building a stronger tourism economy across the Pacific Asia region. The initiative promotes a future where tourism delivers lasting social, cultural, environmental and economic benefits while creating better experiences for travellers and stronger outcomes for communities.
PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid said, “As PATA celebrates its 75th anniversary, Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose reflects our ongoing commitment to sharing knowledge and showcasing practical solutions that support the future of tourism across the region. Through inspiring stories from destinations, businesses and communities, this series highlights how collaboration, innovation and responsible leadership can create lasting benefits for both people and places. We are proud to partner with Content With Purpose on this initiative and hope it inspires others to help shape a stronger, more resilient visitor economy.”
Alongside this, Max Smith, Founder and Managing Director of Content With Purpose, said: “The most powerful stories in tourism are not about the places people visit; they are about the people who care for those places, the communities whose lives are shaped by tourism and the ideas that can help destinations flourish for generations to come. Across Pacific Asia, we encountered people turning purpose into action with creativity, courage and a deep sense of responsibility. This series brings their stories together, not only to showcase what is possible, but to inspire others to imagine a better future for tourism and play their part in creating it.
Storytelling can make complex challenges feel human, urgent and achievable. Our hope is that these films encourage audiences to look beyond tourism as an industry and see it as a powerful force for connection, opportunity and lasting positive change.”
The series has been created for a wide range of tourism stakeholders, including industry professionals, destination management organisations, government authorities, public-sector decision-makers, businesses, educators, researchers, students, investors and local communities involved in developing the visitor economy.
The initiative reflects PATA’s broader mission of promoting knowledge exchange, strengthening professional connections and supporting the long-term resilience of tourism economies through innovation, cooperation and the ability to adapt to changing industry needs.
The online release comes after the series was introduced during a preview event at PATA Travel Mart 2026, where representatives from the regional tourism sector received an early insight into the stories, ideas and viewpoints presented throughout the films.
