For that reason, travellers from India planning a Chilean holiday should check their eligibility directly with Chilean consular authorities before booking flights or relying on a third-country visa.

This is particularly important for travellers combining Chile with the United States, as possessing a valid US visa should not be treated as a blanket substitute for Chilean authorisation.

Permanencia Transitoria Covers Most Tourist Visits

For travellers who are eligible to enter without prior authorisation, Permanencia Transitoria provides the framework for a temporary visit.

SERMIG states that eligible foreign nationals can generally receive a stay of up to 90 continuous days. The status can also be extended once for up to another 90 days, provided the request is made before the original period expires. The current SERMIG fee for that extension is US$100.

SERMIG directs applicants requiring a prior visa or authorisation to Chilean consular services abroad. The service also provides digital procedures for several immigration categories, reflecting Chile’s broader move towards online processing.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also continues to use the Sistema de Atención Consular, known as SAC, for visa-related consular procedures in applicable cases. Official consular guidance confirms SAC is used for certain tourism visa applications, although requirements can vary according to nationality and visa category.

Chile Travel identifies September to November as a strong period for Santiago and the central wine valleys, while the Atacama can be visited throughout the year. Patagonia becomes particularly attractive from October onwards as spring and summer bring milder conditions and wider access to trails and tourism services.
