Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, departed the island today en route to Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, where he will represent Jamaica at the 122nd Executive Council Meeting of the United Nations (UN) Tourism. The meeting, taking place from November 13–15, 2024, provides Jamaica the opportunity to play an influential role in shaping global tourism policy. As the Second Vice Chair of the UN Tourism Executive Council, the island nation will have a key voice in advancing discussions on sustainable tourism practices and global development strategies.

Minister Bartlett expressed optimism about Jamaica’s participation, highlighting the nation’s unique position to drive a forward-thinking global tourism agenda. As Second Vice Chair, Jamaica is committed to promoting sustainability, innovation, and regional interests, particularly those of small-island nations. This meeting serves as a platform for us to advocate for Caribbean tourism and reinforce its role as a vital engine for economic growth in the region.

During the meeting, Minister Bartlett will engage with global tourism leaders to discuss critical issues such as sustainable tourism, community development, and investment. This year’s discussions will include the UN Tourism Global Investment and Innovation Forum, which is expected to be a central focus. The event will also feature the “UN Tourism Tech Adventure: Colombia Community Challenge,” the “Best Tourism Villages 2024” awards ceremony, and sessions on aligning tourism with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Minister Bartlett further emphasized the significance of the event, noting Jamaica’s strong commitment to sustainable tourism. “This platform allows us to share our successes and learn from others, fostering innovation and resilience across the global tourism sector,” he said. “By working with international partners, Jamaica can further strengthen the tourism industry’s role in sustainable global development.”
