Indians planning trips to Japan have been provided a significant convenience as Japan introduces eVisas for Indian tourists, eliminating the need for physical visa stickers on their passports. This modernized approach, facilitated through Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global, has been highlighted in recent media reports.

The eVisa initiative, eagerly anticipated, simplifies the process for Indian travelers and foreign nationals residing in India seeking to visit Japan for tourism. This program allows for a single-entry short-term visa, permitting a stay of up to 90 days in the country.

Applications for the electronic visa are to be submitted through the Visa Application Centers managed by VFS Global, similar to the previous visa application process. However, a notable change under the new system is that successful applicants will now receive an electronic visa instead of the traditional visa sticker.

Upon arrival at the airport in Japan, travelers are required to present a “visa issuance notice” on their mobile phones, necessitating internet access to complete this step. It’s essential to note that only the digital visa issuance notice is acceptable for entry, with alternatives such as PDFs, photos, screenshots, or printed copies not being recognized.

This transition to eVisas is poised to streamline the travel experience for those visiting Japan from India, marking a shift towards more efficient and paperless travel documentation processes. It underscores Japan’s efforts to facilitate travel for international visitors, potentially enhancing its appeal as a travel destination for global tourists and making the journey more convenient and accessible.
