Japan’s aviation sector has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from 17 million seats in January 2005 to 25 million in January 2025, reflecting steady development over two decades.

A key highlight has been the shift toward increased international capacity, especially in the last ten years.

From Stability to International Expansion
In the first decade, total seat capacity remained stable, with domestic flights dominating 64% of the market.

However, the past decade has seen robust growth in international routes, reducing domestic capacity to 52% of the total.

According to Cirium data, the sector reached its peak monthly seat capacity in August 2019 with 24.5 million seats.

Surpassing Pre-Pandemic Levels
By January 2025, Japan’s aviation capacity had exceeded pre-pandemic levels by 3.3%.

International capacity has been the primary driver of this recovery, with key markets showing substantial growth:

• South Korea: 2.6 million seats (+13% vs. January 2019)
• China: 2.2 million seats (+24% vs. January 2019)
• Taiwan: 1.6 million seats (+16% vs. January 2019)

Boost from Tourism and the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025
The rise in inbound tourism has been a significant contributor to Japan’s aviation recovery.

The upcoming Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 is expected to further boost international arrivals, solidifying Japan’s position as a global travel hub.

With this growth trajectory and the return of international travelers, Japan’s aviation industry is poised for continued expansion, supported by increasing global connectivity and major events on the horizon.
