Suan Dusit Arun Emerges As Bangkok’s Must-Visit Rooftop Park For Green Travel Experiences

In its first year, the vertical park Suan Dusit Arun has become an iconic green space and an important case study in urban planning in Bangkok. Last September 3, the park announced its first anniversary and disclosed its first visitation and environmental impact data. The data shows that 2,621 visitors on average frequented the park each day during its first year. Park officials attributed the success of the park to Bangkok’s growing desire for public spaces, particularly parks, and to the urban environment becoming more hospitable toward greenery.

Rising above Bangkok’s central business district, Suan Dusit Arun has quickly become a defining feature of the Dusit Central Park development, offering visitors panoramic views towards Lumpini Park, one of the city’s most recognised green areas. More than a recreational attraction, the rooftop destination was created to address pressing urban challenges, including increasing heat levels, limited public greenery and the need to protect biodiversity within a rapidly developing city.

The publicly accessible rooftop landscape has been designed as a place where residents, workers and travellers can experience nature, relaxation and open space without leaving central Bangkok. Visitor activities and park operations are carefully managed to maintain the landscape’s ecological balance while preserving a calm and comfortable environment for continued public enjoyment.

Serving as the green heart of Dusit Central Park, Suan Dusit Arun connects the development’s major destinations, including Dusit Thani Bangkok, Central Park Offices, Central Park shopping centre, and the 69-storey residential tower featuring Dusit Residences and Dusit Parkside. The rooftop park creates a shared outdoor environment that brings together hospitality, retail, business and residential communities.

The park’s design follows a nature-focused approach that responds to Bangkok’s tropical climate. Landscape planning incorporates wind movement, sunlight patterns and Feng Shui concepts to create a balanced relationship between the built environment and natural surroundings. The design aims to enhance comfort while encouraging visitors to reconnect with greenery in the middle of the city.

Nearly the entire rooftop landscape, around 98% of the total area, has been dedicated to green space. The park features 184 varieties of plants, including 48 native Thai species, creating a diverse ecosystem that supports recreation, education, community activities and peaceful experiences.

The carefully selected vegetation includes native shade trees, flowering plants and species adapted to changing climate conditions. The landscape also includes nine tree species listed in threatened categories of the IUCN Red List, including two critically endangered species, two endangered species and five vulnerable species.

Beyond environmental benefits, Suan Dusit Arun reflects Thailand’s cultural identity through its planting choices. The landscape incorporates sacred spirit trees, plant species connected with traditional Thai literature and jasmine, a flower strongly associated with Thailand’s Mother’s Day celebrations. Pollinator-supporting plants, including mangrove apple and queen’s crape myrtle, further strengthen the park’s ecological role.

Water conservation forms another important part of the rooftop park’s sustainability strategy. Around 25% of irrigation requirements are supported through harvested or recycled water, combined with an automated irrigation system that controls watering schedules efficiently.

The extensive green coverage also helps improve Bangkok’s urban resilience. Compared with conventional hard rooftop surfaces, the planted landscape is estimated to reduce stormwater runoff entering the city drainage network by between 30% and 50%, helping manage rainfall while supporting a more sustainable urban environment.

Initial environmental monitoring conducted on 13 and 14 March 2026 provided early evidence of the park’s cooling and air-quality benefits. Temperature readings recorded 31°C inside Suan Dusit Arun, compared with 33°C outside the project area, showing the potential impact of rooftop greenery in reducing urban heat.

During the same monitoring period, suspended particulate matter levels were found to be approximately 35% lower inside the park compared with surrounding areas, indicating the contribution of vegetation in improving the immediate environment.

With its combination of biodiversity protection, climate-conscious landscaping and public accessibility, Suan Dusit Arun represents a new generation of urban parks designed for modern cities. The rooftop destination demonstrates how large-scale developments can integrate nature, community spaces and environmental solutions while creating a healthier and more sustainable experience for Bangkok’s residents and visitors.

Beyond welcoming thousands of visitors for everyday recreation, Suan Dusit Arun also developed a diverse programme of community, wellness and educational activities during its first year of operation. The rooftop park hosted 43 specially curated events and visits, attracting more than 9,500 participants through a range of activities focused on health, learning, creativity and community engagement.

The year-round programme included wellness sessions such as aerobics, Pilates and city runs, along with cultural and educational activities including Children’s Day celebrations, live music performances, design discussions and learning visits from schools and universities. These initiatives helped position Suan Dusit Arun not only as a green public space but also as a platform for community connection and knowledge exchange.

The park collaborated with various organisations, including Silpakorn University, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited (SCGP), the Thai Red Cross, educational institutions, community groups and commercial partners, to create meaningful experiences that encouraged participation and environmental awareness.

Sustainability efforts at Suan Dusit Arun also extend to waste management through its partnership with SCGP. The park participates in the company’s “Old for New” recycling initiative, separating approximately 100 kilograms of cardboard from operational waste every month for recycling. Event organisers are also encouraged to minimise single-use plastics and select reusable or recyclable materials whenever possible to reduce environmental impact.

As part of Bangkok Climate Action Week 2026, Suan Dusit Arun and Dusit International will partner with the Big Trees Foundation to organise “Tree Walk: Discovering the Value of Urban Trees at Suan Dusit Arun” on 9 October 2026.

The half-day programme will be led by landscape architect Touchapon Soontrajarn and professional arborists, offering participants insights into the importance of urban trees and sustainable landscape management. The activity will explore how thoughtful planting strategies and tree care can contribute to cooler cities, improved air quality, biodiversity protection and enhanced public well-being.

Scheduled from 9:00 to 11:30 hrs, the event will welcome a limited group of 30 participants at a cost of THB 250 per person. All proceeds from registration will be donated to the Big Trees Foundation to support urban tree conservation efforts. Registration will be available through the Bangkok Climate Action Week platform.
