Locals annoyed with tourists relishing in Maui’s tropical coastlines

The inappropriate picture of tourists taking pleasure in Maui’s tropical coastlines while search-and-rescue teams dig around the ruins of buildings and provides waters for the fire ravaged victims of the deadliest wildfire in the United States in more than a century has annoyed some local residents.

On social media, they have vented posting video of tourists relishing snorkeling and other adventure activities while the toll of dead people and victims in Lahaina, the historic resort, crosses 100 and is constantly increasing on an everyday basis.

On Instagram, Hawaiian actor Jason Momoa, said that their community needs time to grieve, heal, as well as reinstate everything they have lost, requesting tourists to call off their trips.

The businesses and officials have however welcomed the trickle of tourists, asserting that it will decrease the blow to the economy of the island, which is heavily dependent on tourism. The industry is the economic engine of Maui, generating 80% of its prosperity, as per the economic development board of the island.

As Maui kick-starts on a long, throbbing revival from the wildfires, officials are struggling exactly how to balance the locals with instant needs for resources and housing against the long-term financial health of the island.
