The Manele Golf Course, designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus and situated within the serene confines of the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, stands as a true hidden gem. Nestled on the smallest inhabited island in Hawaii, this remarkable golf course is poised to celebrate its 30th anniversary on December 25, 2023, offering guests a host of exciting activities throughout the festive season.

Perched high above the tumultuous waves of Hulopoe Bay, the Manele Golf Course is a golfing masterpiece that lives up to its reputation for providing a challenging experience. Constructed upon rugged lava outcroppings, this Par 72, 7,039-yard course boasts three captivating cliff-top holes that ingeniously utilize the Pacific Ocean as a natural water hazard. With five different tees, the course caters to golfers of all skill levels while remaining a formidable challenge for even the most seasoned players. Tee shots across natural gorges and ravines demand precision, and golfers are captivated by the breathtaking ocean vistas that grace every hole. During the winter months, the fairways offer a front-row seat to the awe-inspiring spectacle of whales on their annual migration.

Over the course of three decades, Manele Golf Course has garnered a multitude of accolades, a testament to its breathtaking location, unwavering commitment to stewardship, and dedication to delivering an unparalleled golfing experience. It’s no surprise that Manele Golf Course has become a must-visit destination for avid golfers.

On the anniversary day, guests at Four Seasons Resort Lanai can test their luck with the “Hit the Green Contest.” Contestants can take a swing at winning a special prize between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm on December 25th. For those not participating in golf, a special Bloody Mary bar cart will be available.

Jack Nicklaus himself regards Manele Golf Course as one of his finest creations, suitable for championship events yet equally enjoyable for a casual round among friends. The commitment to a championship-level course is evident in every hole, demanding concentration and strategic judgment from golfers.

Among its iconic holes, the 12th hole stands out, renowned for its challenging 200-yard carry across the deep blue ocean. This par 3 hole hangs precariously 150 feet above the surf, with no fairway to ease the journey. It’s a sheer carry over the sea to reach the green.

The VIEWS Restaurant at the Course pays homage to this famous hole with a special cocktail called “The Manele Transfusion #12.” Available on the menu from December 24, 2023, to January 1, 2024, this drink offers Lanai’s unique twist on what many consider the original golf cocktail, featuring Tito’s vodka, Concord grape juice, lime juice, lilikoi, and a ginger ale floater.

Scott Ashworth, Director of Golf and one of Hawaii’s most distinguished golf professionals, brings over 25 years of experience to the Manele Golf Course. He has earned numerous accolades, including the 2018 and 2008 Golf Professional of the Year from the PGA Aloha Section. His dedication to the sport led him to serve as the District 11 Director for the PGA of America, representing the Aloha, Northern California, and Southern California Sections on the National Board of Directors from 2016 to 2018, with a recent reappointment starting in November 2024.

Ashworth is supported by his dedicated colleagues, Kendric Kimizuka, Head Golf Professional, and Seril Shimizu, Golf Course Superintendent, who together boast nearly 30 years of experience at Manele Golf Course. Ashworth emphasizes the strong teamwork within their leadership, which has been instrumental in achieving their goals. He states, “Our success and the cherished memories our players create on our greens are the result of a collective effort from all our golf employees.”

One of Ashworth’s favorite anecdotes revolves around a visit from the course’s designer, Jack Nicklaus, nine years ago. As they explored the course and contemplated potential renovation plans, they arrived at the signature 12th hole, arguably one of the most famous ocean-side cliff holes in the world. An expectant silence filled the air until Mr. Nicklaus finally broke it, declaring, “No need to do anything here!” With that, they moved on to the next hole. It was a moment that underscored the unparalleled magnificence of Manele Golf Course.
