The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the north-west of England.

This has led to cancellation of the Merseyrail morning services.

It is due to the possibility of ice forming on the tracks.

Temporary measures have been put in place at Merseyrail as temperatures are expected to plummet to -3C tonight.

Merseyrail has activated its cold weather plans ahead of a probable drop in temperatures overnight, going into January 16.

Merseyrail said 75 miles of track on the network will be treated to protect against from ice build-up.

However, wet weather conditions can wash the treatment off the rails, causing them to freeze.

This can lead to trains becoming stranded.

Due to this, the first services of the day on each line will run without passengers to ensure routes are clear of ice. Also, peak time services have the best chance of running normally.
