Heavy rainfall and flooding have caused extensive damage and claimed over 145 lives across northern parts of India, including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In Himachal Pradesh alone, the death toll has risen to 91, with several people still missing. The torrential rain has triggered landslides, flash floods, and washed away bridges, leading to the paralysis of normal life in the affected areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning until July 17, and a wet spell is expected to continue until July 19. The State Emergency Response Centre reports that 1,110 roads remain blocked, and significant damage has been inflicted on infrastructure, with approximately 636 houses completely destroyed and another 1,128 partially damaged. The estimated loss due to the rains in Himachal Pradesh amounts to Rs 2,108 crore according to official figures, although the chief minister estimates it to be around Rs 4,000 crore.

Rescue operations are underway, with efforts made to evacuate stranded tourists and provide relief to affected families. However, the situation remains dire. In Delhi, the overflowing Yamuna River has disrupted normal life, causing waterlogging in various areas, including government offices, schools, and colleges. The water level of the Yamuna has reached a record high, leading to a shortage of drinking water as treatment plants have been closed. The iconic Red Fort and other prominent locations have also been affected by the flooding.

Punjab and Haryana have also been severely impacted, with 21 reported deaths and numerous districts affected. Relief work is underway, and thousands of people have been moved to safer places. The agricultural lands in Karnal and Panipat districts have been inundated by the floodwaters. The Punjab government has extended school holidays due to safety concerns.

Efforts are ongoing to mitigate the effects of the heavy rain and flooding, but the situation remains challenging as more rain is expected in the coming days.
