Seychelles ignited a tourism revival in August 2026 as the island nation recorded its strongest August visitor performance in four years, with international arrivals rising by 14.1% year-on-year to 34,987 travellers. The surge was driven by improved air connectivity, expanded flight capacity from key international markets and renewed demand for leisure holidays, helping the destination recover after a challenging start to the year.

The latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics show that arrivals increased by 14.1% compared with August 2025, marking a significant recovery after a challenging first half of the year.

The August 2026 visitor figure exceeded arrivals recorded during the same month in 2023 and 2024, when Seychelles welcomed 28,177 and 28,282 travellers respectively. The increase highlights renewed interest in the Indian Ocean destination and signals improving conditions for the country’s tourism industry.

A major factor behind the recovery has been the expansion of international flight options. Turkish Airlines restarted services to Seychelles in June 2026 with three weekly flights, followed by Aeroflot’s return in July with two weekly services. These additional connections increased capacity from important overseas markets ahead of the busy August travel period.

Air Seychelles also strengthened regional connectivity by operating daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Seychelles, compared with six weekly services in the previous year. The airline continued operating three weekly direct flights to Paris, while new services from Discover Airlines and Air Tanzania further expanded access to the destination.

Seychelles Tourism Recovery Gains Strength After Early 2026 Declines

The latest growth marks the second consecutive month of positive tourism performance for Seychelles after a difficult start to 2026. Visitor arrivals increased by 1.8% in July compared with the previous year before accelerating strongly in August.

However, the overall tourism performance during the first eight months of 2026 remained below the previous year’s level. Seychelles recorded 232,970 visitors between January and August 2026, compared with 254,142 arrivals during the same period in 2025, representing an 8.3% decline.

Despite the reduction, the 2026 figure remained higher than the first eight months of 2024 and 2023. Seychelles welcomed 230,299 visitors during January-August 2024 and 229,205 visitors during the same period in 2023.

The year showed significant fluctuations in demand. The tourism sector started positively, with visitor growth of 7.2% in January and 14.8% in February. However, arrivals dropped sharply in March and April, declining by 37.2% and 28.4% respectively compared with the previous year. May recorded a smaller decline of 3.4%, followed by another fall of 24.8% in June.

The strong performance in July and August indicates that Seychelles has entered a recovery phase, although continued growth will be important during the remaining months of 2026.

Europe Continues To Lead Seychelles Visitor Markets As Africa Shows Growth

Europe remained Seychelles’ largest source market during August 2026, contributing 23,301 visitors and accounting for 66.6% of total arrivals.

Asia ranked as the second-largest regional market, providing 7,401 visitors or 21.2% of arrivals, while Africa contributed 2,963 visitors.

Despite Europe’s leading position, the region experienced an overall decline during the January-August period. European arrivals decreased by 8.2%, falling from 176,046 visitors in 2025 to 161,592 in 2026.

Asia recorded a larger decline of 13.4%, with arrivals dropping from 47,565 visitors to 41,204 during the same period. Visitor numbers from the Americas declined by 15.5%, while Oceania recorded a 6% decrease.

Africa was the only region to achieve year-to-date growth, with arrivals increasing by 9.1%. Visitor numbers from Africa rose from 17,216 during the first eight months of 2025 to 18,788 in 2026.

The growth from markets including South Africa, Nigeria, China and Turkey is supporting Seychelles’ efforts to diversify its international tourism base and reduce dependence on traditional source markets.

Tourism Revenue Rises As Visitors Continue Longer Island Stays

Although visitor numbers remained lower than 2025 levels, Seychelles recorded positive tourism revenue growth during 2026.

Preliminary figures indicate that tourism earnings increased by 4.7% between January and July compared with the same period in 2025. From January to August, tourism revenue growth reached 5.1%.

Leisure tourism continued to dominate visitor demand. In August, 31,017 travellers visited Seychelles for holidays, while 2,540 visitors travelled for honeymoons and 656 arrived for business purposes.

During the first eight months of 2026, holiday travellers accounted for 206,867 of the total 232,970 visitors, showing the continued importance of leisure tourism for the island nation.

Visitors also maintained relatively long stays in Seychelles. The average length of stay in August stood at 9.6 nights, slightly below the 9.9 nights recorded in August 2025 and 10 nights in August 2024.

For the January-July period, the average stay increased slightly from 9.3 nights in 2025 to 9.4 nights in 2026, supporting greater visitor spending across accommodation, dining, transport and local experiences.

First-Time Travellers Drive Seychelles Tourism Demand In 2026

Seychelles attracted a high number of new visitors during August 2026, with first-time travellers representing the majority of arrivals.

Of the 34,987 visitors recorded during the month, 31,948 travellers, equal to 91.3%, were visiting Seychelles for the first time. Repeat visitors accounted for 3,039 arrivals.

The strong share of first-time visitors reflects continued global interest in Seychelles as a destination known for its beaches, marine environment, nature experiences and wellness-focused travel opportunities.

Changing traveller behaviour is also shaping tourism strategies. Visitors are increasingly using digital platforms to research destinations, compare value and search for authentic experiences connected with nature, culture and wellbeing.

Seychelles is strengthening its tourism research through a pre-arrival survey designed to understand visitor motivations and travel decisions. A future departure survey will evaluate visitor satisfaction and measure how effectively the destination meets traveller expectations.

With tourism remaining a key pillar of the Seychelles economy, the final months of 2026 will be important as the country works to build on the strong August recovery and move closer to the record 398,841 visitor arrivals achieved in 2025.
