During the summer of 2023, downtown Oklahoma City was abuzz with the activities of film crews working on the sequel to “Twister,” while the town of Pawhuska, the tribal capital of the Osage Nation, served as the primary location for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Sylvester Stallone’s presence in the state for the filming of “Tulsa King” turned into a widespread hobby. This period has seen Oklahoma attract high-profile talents such as Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Matt Damon. Lee Isaac Chung, after filming his Oscar-winning “Minari” in Oklahoma, chose the state again for “Twisters.” The Emmy-nominated “Reservation Dogs,” largely shot in Okmulgee, was Sterlin Harjo’s homage to his home state.

Oklahoma’s thriving film festivals and studios, including the expansive Prairie Surf Studios located in downtown Oklahoma City, have played a crucial role in transforming the city into a modern boomtown. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in this burgeoning film scene by attending festivals like deadCenter in Oklahoma City and Twisted Arts in Tulsa.

The ease of travel between Oklahoma City and Tulsa, either via I-44 or the scenic Route 66, enhances the visitor experience. Fans of “Tulsa King” and other productions have the opportunity to visit filming locations and enjoy local attractions, further boosting the state’s appeal as a film tourism destination.

Oklahoma’s pioneering film incentive program, launched in 2001, has steadily grown, attracting a significant number of productions and creating thousands of jobs. The bipartisan Filmed in Oklahoma Act of 2021, offering up to a 37 percent cash rebate on film-related expenses, has positioned Oklahoma as a competitive destination for filmmakers.

The local film industry’s success has led to the creation of jobs and the retention of local talent, with educational programs and organizations ensuring representation and inclusivity. The state’s diverse landscapes offer a variety of filming locations, from the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve to cinematic small towns like Guthrie and El Reno.

The impact of the film industry on Oklahoma’s tourism economy has been substantial, with a record-breaking $11.8 billion reported. New hotels and attractions continue to cater to the influx of visitors drawn by the film industry, underscoring Oklahoma’s emergence as a new frontier for Hollywood productions and film enthusiasts alike.
