Saudi Arabia is increasing its influence in luxury tourism on the world map through two initiatives which reflect the Kingdom is seeing growth in its hospitality sector and investments. The Desert Rock Resort in the Red Sea has been awarded the prestigious Three MICHELIN Keys award by the MICHELIN Guide, and the start of TOURISE 2027 in Riyadh is focusing on investments in international tourism. Both these initiatives are showing that Saudi Arabia is focusing on two important aspects of tourism – distinctive destination resorts and international investments.

Desert Rock Reaches Michelin’s Highest Hotel Distinction

The Red Sea’s Desert Rock Resort has become the first hotel in Saudi Arabia to receive Three MICHELIN Keys in the 2026 hotel selection.

The announcement was made on September 18, with the resort also receiving the MICHELIN Guide Architecture & Design Award. The property, developed by Red Sea Global, sits within the Hijaz Mountains near the Red Sea coast and is designed around the dramatic granite landscape.

Rather than imposing a conventional resort structure on the mountains, Desert Rock incorporates its architecture into the surrounding terrain. The property features villas and suites positioned among the rocks, with several accommodations designed to create a secluded experience closely connected to the landscape.

The Three MICHELIN Keys recognition follows anonymous and independent inspections by MICHELIN Guide inspectors. The hotel distinction considers factors including architecture and design, service, personality, location and the overall quality of the guest experience.

Saudi Arabia received 17 MICHELIN Key hotels in the 2026 selection, with Desert Rock standing alone at the highest Three-Key level.

A New Model for Red Sea Luxury

Desert Rock is part of a wider Red Sea tourism development that is introducing a different form of high-end travel to Saudi Arabia.

The appeal is built around privacy, dramatic natural surroundings and carefully designed accommodation rather than conventional urban luxury. For international travellers seeking remote stays, the Hijaz Mountains offer a setting that combines desert landscapes with the coastline and emerging hospitality infrastructure of the Red Sea destination.

The recognition also gives Saudi Arabia a globally recognised luxury benchmark at a time when the Kingdom is expanding its international tourism proposition.

For the Red Sea region, this matters beyond one property. High-profile hotel recognition can increase visibility for surrounding destinations, encourage premium travel demand and strengthen the appeal of the wider hospitality ecosystem being developed along the coast.

TOURISE 2027 Brings Investment Into Focus

Just days before the Michelin announcement, Saudi Arabia also announced the second edition of TOURISE, the global tourism forum scheduled for Riyadh from March 23 to 25, 2027.

The launch took place on September 16 under the patronage of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb, who also chairs TOURISE, announced the upcoming summit under the theme “Alliances That Move the World.”

The event will bring together leaders from tourism, technology, investment, sustainability, culture and transport. Its focus is on partnerships, investment and the actions shaping the next phase of global tourism.

From Red Sea Resorts to Diriyah

TOURISE also fits into Saudi Arabia’s broader effort to connect tourism development with international capital and private-sector participation.

Destinations such as the Red Sea, Diriyah and Sindalah represent different components of the Kingdom’s expanding tourism portfolio. Their positioning ranges from nature-led coastal escapes and island hospitality to heritage, culture, entertainment and ultra-premium urban experiences.

For luxury tourism, this creates a destination network rather than a single resort proposition. Travellers can increasingly encounter different experiences within one country, while investors and hospitality groups gain access to a market undergoing large-scale tourism development.

Saudi Arabia’s Luxury Tourism Story Expands

The importance of Michelin-starred status at Desert Rock comes from the way that it reflects the future direction of the luxury tourism sector in Saudi Arabia. The resort combines architecture, landscape and privacy to give the destination on the Red Sea its unique identity in the international luxury hotel market. Meanwhile, the launch of TOURISE represents a third piece of the puzzle by establishing Riyadh as a hub for collaboration between tourism investors, operations, technology and policymakers. In other words, the two initiatives complement one another in that the first highlights what Saudi Arabia has to offer for luxury tourists while the second is focused on building the relationships and investments that will help create tomorrow’s offerings. With new resorts and destinations being launched in the Kingdom, Saudi Arabia’s luxury tourism offering continues to evolve from one new location after another to something more holistic.
