The United States became the Dominican Republic’s number one travel market in 2026, accounting for around 8.5 million incoming trips and setting a new record for tourist arrivals.

The Dominican Republic reached a new benchmark in its tourism recovery and expansion with 8.5 million arrivals in the first eight months of 2026. The country has become even more attractive to travelers, thanks to the combination of international tourism demand, more cruise activities, and traveler confidence.

Between January and August 2026, the country recorded 8,556,415 visitor arrivals, representing a 6.9% increase compared with the same period in 2025. The latest figures highlight the continued momentum of the Dominican Republic’s tourism industry as it moves beyond previous records and attracts travellers from key global markets.

The total visitor count included 6,610,258 tourists arriving by air and 1,946,151 cruise passengers, showing balanced growth across both traditional holiday travel and the rapidly expanding cruise sector.

Compared with previous years, the performance demonstrates a significant transformation in the country’s tourism landscape. Visitor numbers were 9.8% higher than in 2024 and stood 58.9% above 2019 levels, reflecting the strong long-term growth of the Dominican Republic as a leading international destination.

August 2026 Strengthens Dominican Republic Tourism Momentum With More Than 850,000 Visitors

The positive trend continued throughout August 2026, when the Dominican Republic welcomed 856,858 visitors, recording another month of strong international demand.

The August figure represented a 6.2% rise compared with August 2025, while arrivals were also 5.4% higher than the same month in 2024. Compared with the pre-pandemic period, the increase was even more significant, with visitor numbers standing 52.3% above August 2019 levels.

Air travel remained the main contributor to tourism growth during the month, with 725,560 international tourists arriving by air. This marked a 2.6% increase compared with August 2025, demonstrating continued demand for the country’s beaches, resorts, cultural experiences and natural attractions.

Cruise tourism delivered even stronger growth. The Dominican Republic welcomed 131,298 cruise passengers in August, representing a major 31.9% increase compared with the same month a year earlier.

The rise in cruise arrivals reflects the country’s growing importance within Caribbean cruise itineraries, supported by expanded port infrastructure and increasing interest from international cruise operators.

United States Remains Dominican Republic’s Largest Tourism Market as Global Demand Expands

The Dominican Republic continues to attract travellers from a diverse range of international markets, with North America maintaining a dominant role in visitor arrivals.

The United States remained the largest source market in August 2026, contributing 44% of all tourist arrivals. Strong air connectivity, established travel links and high demand for Caribbean holidays continue to support the country’s popularity among American travellers.

Canada ranked as the second-largest market, accounting for 9% of arrivals, followed by Colombia with 8%. South American markets also continued to show strong interest, with Argentina contributing 5% of visitors.

European markets remained important contributors to Dominican Republic tourism. Spain and the United Kingdom each represented 4% of total arrivals, while Puerto Rico and Mexico each accounted for 3%.

The broad distribution of visitors highlights the destination’s ability to attract travellers from multiple regions rather than relying on a single international market. This diversification provides greater stability for the tourism economy and supports continued growth across hotels, airlines, cruise services and local businesses.

Punta Cana Airport Leads Dominican Republic Air Connectivity With Nearly Half of Flight Arrivals

Air transport infrastructure played a major role in supporting the country’s tourism expansion, with several international airports handling millions of travellers throughout 2026.

Punta Cana International Airport remained the country’s busiest aviation gateway, managing 49% of all flights during the measured period. The airport’s strong performance reflects Punta Cana’s global reputation as a leading Caribbean resort destination.

The second-largest share was recorded by Las Américas International Airport, which handled 29% of flights. Located near the capital Santo Domingo, the airport serves both leisure and business travellers visiting the country.

Cibao International Airport accounted for 14% of flight operations, supporting tourism demand from northern regions and communities with strong international connections.

Meanwhile, Puerto Plata International Airport and Higüero Airport each represented 3% of flights, while La Romana and Samaná contributed 1% each.

The distribution of airport activity demonstrates the Dominican Republic’s expanding tourism network, with multiple gateways helping travellers access different regions of the country.

High Visitor Satisfaction Shows Strong Confidence in Dominican Republic Travel Experience

Beyond visitor numbers, the Dominican Republic’s tourism performance was also supported by positive traveller feedback and strong satisfaction levels.

Hotel occupancy reached 68% in August 2026, reflecting steady demand during the travel period. The figure demonstrates continued confidence among international visitors choosing the country for holidays, resort stays and Caribbean experiences.

Visitor satisfaction remained high, with travellers rating their overall experience 4.3 out of 5. The results indicate that the destination continues to deliver positive experiences across accommodation, hospitality services, attractions and tourism activities.

According to tourism figures, 90% of visitors said they would return to the Dominican Republic, showing strong loyalty among international travellers. In addition, 60% said they would recommend the destination to friends and family, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a preferred Caribbean getaway.
