Peru dominates with nearly 20% of Latin America’s top 50 restaurants in 2023

During the presentation ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 28, 2023, Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants awarded the top spot to Maido, the restaurant helmed by Peruvian chef Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura. This marks the fourth time that Micha’s establishment has received this prestigious accolade. Notably, eight other Peruvian restaurants secured spots on the list, indicating that nearly one-fifth of the region’s 50 best culinary experiences can be found in Peru.

Maido, renowned for its innovative blend of Peruvian and Japanese cuisines, also clinched the title of the best restaurant in Peru at the Summum Awards 2023. Additionally, Maido’s sommelier, Florencia Rey, was honored as Latin America’s Best Sommelier.

Expressing his enthusiasm during the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurant 2023 ceremony, Micha stated, “I celebrate the power of working together, and I love seeing Latin American countries showcasing their local cuisines and putting our region on the world map. This has clearly been a top year for Latin America, and 2024 will be another beautiful year for this wonderful continent.”

Among the notable restaurants included in the ranking are Kjolle (#7) led by chef Pía León, who was named World’s Best Female Chef, Mayta (#10) also ranked 47th in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, Mérito (#13) – a fusion of Peruvian and Venezuelan cuisine, Osso (#33) – a Lima favorite known for its exceptional meat cuts, Mil Centro (#39) – a culinary project in Moray (Cusco) named World’s Best Gastronomic Experience at the World Culinary Awards, La Mar (#42) – recognized as the best cevichería in Lima by the local Summum 2023 awards, Rafael (#46) owned by renowned chef Rafael Osterling, and Cosme (#50) – a debutant on the list.

These culinary successes are not isolated, as Peruvian restaurant Central was crowned the #1 best restaurant in the world by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023. Furthermore, two of its bars, Carnaval (#43) and Lady Bee (#52), made appearances in The World’s 50 Best Bars 2023.
