It’s a top priority to establish the northern port city of Thessaloniki into a perennial destination for its mayor, Konstantinos Zervas. Zervas said that the average duration of stay for visitors have increased from 1.2 days to 2.7.

He said that Thessaloniki has become a global destination and they have started to reap the rewards.

The authorities are now looking forward to 12-month tourism.

In addition to lengthier stays in the city, Zervas said that tourists are also spending more with average expenses increasing by 25 percent compared to the years before.

As much as 600 new beds have been added to Thessaloniki’s accommodation capacity.

The mayor said that openings of new hotel are underway to cater to the increasing demand which is evident in higher airport, port and hotel activity.

Advanced infrastructure, the Thessaloniki metro and improved public space are all likely to boost the tourist experience, said Zervas.

He said that a major step forward has been the entrance of more than 60 cruises ships this year, going up up from 16 last year and 20 before the pandemic in 2019.

Zervas attributed the vibrant revival to the continuing publicity and marketing efforts along with other actions comprising upholding Thessaloniki as a prominent filming site.

The Thessaloniki municipality has given out 40 authorizations for using public spaces this year as film and commercial locations.
